Lipari owners, your insights would be appreciated

We are thinking of making a formal offer on Lipari and I am hoping that a few current or previous Lipari owners are willing to share some of their insights and observations about the boat. Our intended use is to primarily cruise the Texas Gulf Coast with occasional trips to Louisiana and Florida.

Is there anything in particular that we should ask the surveyor to keep an eye out for?

Any known issues we should consider or be aware of? I have read about the osmosis concerns, but it would appear that those cases are not that common.

The boat is very clean and had the Volvo engine replacement performed. My only concern is the Volvo Penta MDI units. They appear, at least by some reports, to be less than bullet proof. Being NMEA2000 based, I could envision a scenario where in the boat takes a lightening strike on passage and you find yourself dead in the water because the engine controls got zapped. Just one of the cases where old school, low tech methods are more than sufficient and far more reliable IMO.

Maybe this will help.

HighTemp... I bought my 2014 Lipari 2 years ago and have gotten to know her pretty well. I have heard of the MDI Volvo Penta problems but it doesn't seem to be a problem on the Lipari (so far)... However, I have purchased an extra MDI as a spare just in case. There has been no osmosis problems with mine (hull # 153). Structurally she is very sound and she sails very well both to windward and downwind. PM me if you would like more specific information. There is a wealth of information about all things FP on this forum and the Helia 44 forum. Also check out the Facebook FP owners page.

HighTemp... Another Lipari has had a problem with his rudder stocks. You may want your surveyor to inspect them closely. You can also search for this problem on google or these forums for more information.

I own one Lipari from 2010 which had the osmosis treatment, 2 others from 2012 and 2013 in our charter flet + a private Lipari that we look after for more than 4 years. We never had any specific problem with any of them including high temp , rudder stock or whatsoever. Maybe we were lucky

Cheers

Re: Lipari owners, your insights would be appreciated

Quick update:

Our offer was excepted and we are scheduled for survey tomorrow. There are no travel lifts in our area wide enough to handle the boat so its a 3 to 4 hour sail down the bay and based on the forecast, a 3 to 4 hour motor back, so the test sail should be very thorough.

Hopefully, before months end we will get the deal closed and be back on the water.
