Fishing

Helia 44 Owners,

The Wify was looking for something SHINY, so I purchased these.
2X Stainless Tournament Style Clamp on Fishing Rod Holder for Rails 7/8" to 1"
for $39 usd shipped.

They look great. Hope they help us catch more fish.

Re: Fishing

I have 4 of these on the stern. Looking at adding another centerline on the stern somehow to get a good spread. BTW, I picked up the book The Cruisers Handbook of Fishing. Bunch of good references.

Re: Fishing

I love fishing and trolling, but I've always felt that rod holders that extend above the rail have no place on a sail boat. They snag lines and get in the way of loading dinghies etc. A poor design for sailors. I gave several like that away.

They need to be no more than flush with the top of the rail. I've either made or modified all or mine, since the market place doesn't offer anything sensible.

Just an opinion.

That's the beauty of the mounting system on these, you can put them on a vertical rail at whatever height you want. They work great. Ours have just started to show a slight amount of rust that's easily cleaned up after 2 1/2 years. We got them from West Marine, their brand, but look identical to these.

Re: Fishing

Try hamdlines, they're the way to go on a sailboat. Easy to use, stow and cheap.

Keep it all in a 5 gallon bucket and now I actually fish because it's so easy.

Be sure to tie a line to your reel, I lost a very expensive hard to replace rod and reel when something big hit and the WM rod holder that looks just like these broke.
To their credit WM reimbursed me for the rod and reel without a receipt as they were years old.
I bought investment cast 316 SS Taco rod holders from Hopcar and now have a dummy cord that ties the reel to the boat just in case.

Re: Fishing

These rod holders are on the aft rails of a 24'-wide catamaran. We have an additional 2 on the transom rail adjacent to the steps on each pontoon. They've never gotten in the way during sailing or deploying the dinghy. There's tons of room on these boats and flush-mounted rod holders compromise the deck and transom so I wouldn't go any other way on a catamaran. I can understand the concern on monohulls but I would recommend reading Scott & Wendy Bannerot's 'The Cruiser's Handbook of Fishing' before I poo-pooed their use on monohulls. A fine resource from a couple with serious mileage and unassailable cruising fisher credentials.
