BAHIA Rudder - in water repair / replacement

Hello

My port rudder needs repair.
(Lower section smashed and split in two)

Is it possible to remove the rudder in water, repair and install without pulling the boat onto the stand ?

Cheers

Re: BAHIA Rudder - in water repair / replacement

I will start with I have not done this on a Bahia and don’t own one.

But, I did do it just recently on our own similar sized cat, and pictures of the Bahia rudder look very similar. The critical factor in making this easy is where is the top of the rudder tube in relation to the actual waterline? For us the rudder tube ends about 4”/100cm above the waterline. So, it was disconnect the steering gear, attach a line to the rudder stock, detach the final collar that was holding rudder up, and push the rudder out of the boat. One of ours floated, one just barely sank, for that one used a boat hook to grab the line attached to the stock and pull it up.

Plugged up the hole with a plumbing pipe plug so water couldn’t splash in while the rudders were out. Putting them back in did require jumping in the water for 5 minutes. Attached the same rope to the stock to pull the rudder up into the boat. Dropped the rudder into the water, jumped in and lined up with the bearings, shoved a little while a helper on the boat put tension on the rope. Hooked up the steering gear, job done.

One small issue will be checking/setting alignment. If you are using the same rudder you can scribe it before it comes out. We had new rudders and scribed a “straight ahead” line across the top of the shaft to use as a starting point.

Thanks so much for the response.

The job was remarkably easy in the water.
Took 3 of us less than 15 minutes.
