Abaco Anchorage/Mooring in Jan/Feb

Hello All,

I've sailed around Abaco a few times but never in Jan and Feb.

Could some of the more experienced Abaco cruisers tell me if it's a problem to find a marina to hide from a big blow or storm during these months?

I realize that generally you can find a lee anchorage from most directions, but we prefer to off the hook in 20 knots or greater with any amount of fetch.

BTW- We are a 47' monohull.

Thanks very much!

Re: Abaco Anchorage/Mooring in Jan/Feb

Generally speaking, Jan-Feb are pretty quiet months for visiting boats in the Abacos. You shouldn’t have any trouble finding a spot. You will need to plan ahead, and be flexible with your timings and destinations.

Typically, cold fronts come through every 7 to 10 days in the middle of winter, some nasty, some pretty gentle. The constant shuffling around drives some boaters nuts, while others just go with the flow and take it as part of the scene.

Avoiding all winds of >20 knots while on the hook is a challenge, but everybody has there own flavor of cruising.

I can't really speak to marinas since we haven't been to one in the abacos. Mooring fields are abundant though. Green turtle, hope town, man o war. All are very protected from winter winds and typically in Jan and Feb there is plenty of balls free.
Green turtle and hopetown marinas are open again, so you should be able to get a dock.
