Re: XINUTOP Portable OS Linux marine updated

Very interesting. I am keen on the Muplex idea. I am going to have to look at this closely because it would solve a number of issues I am currently contemplating gear-wise.

Have you considered some sort of forum for users to ask questions/talk about the system?

Re: MUPLEX & XINUTOP Portable OS Linux marine

Bonjour Jim,

Thanks for your interest about Muplex. We can consider the current version (0.1b) as stable. Some hundreds of downloads and any feedback of trouble.
As a work alone, sorry, I can't organize my own specialized forum, but you can use this Cruiser Forum, but as I said in documentations, I bring answer mainly on my realization features, not on more general questions which have answers in the web.
Cordialement
Frank

Re: XINUTOP Portable OS Linux marine updated

Hello very nice program xinutop, but why muplex is not present ?
I cannot install muplex because i have not internet (atheros AR5007EG card).
And there is not The command "make" to install the pilote.
And i am not an expert in linux !

Re: XINUTOP Portable OS Linux marine updated

Bonjour Tiersp

Thanks for your apreciation about Xinutop.
The navigators I meet in Kourou are not interested by NMEA bus and all its large possibilities.
They want only a map and a GPS connected. So, to keep Xinutop as simple as possible, I provide Muplex separatly...until here. I take note of your observation, and after reflexion, I will integrate Muplex in future releases, but in the background and you will only have to configure and activate it.
You can install Muplex in this version, it's not so difficult, Muplex is a simple bash script, any "make", any compilation to do.
If you have not internet connection, you can do it:
- From and other place, download the depends (see doc) on Ubuntu -- Ubuntu Packages Search (lucid)
- copy it in your Xinutop computer
- install it by sudo dpkg -i <package>
- copy muplex.sh in /usr/local/sbin
and configure it, that' all
The only difference with future versions of Xinutop with Muplex included will, if you reset Xinutop, the loss of theses adds and changes.

Bluetooth and Muplex

Bonjour Patrick,

It's seems to be a pure bluetooth trouble. Sorry, I have to manage my time, the priority is Xinutop development and I help only on specifics Xinutop features. Muplex is made to mix many NMEA flows in only one channel. So before use it, you must have your NMEA device (BT, USB, serial) sending datas. Google gave me 6 100 000 occurences with : linux bluetooth GPS; make your choice...

Bluetooth

Bonjour Patrick,

No, as bluetooth is for the moment generally an optional device, I have no plans to integrate bluetooth in Xinutop.
As you can see in the readme file, Xinutop is modular and 100% compatible Ubuntu, so if you need Bluetooth, simply type:
apt-get install bluez
that's all
optionnally you can add blueman

The philosophy of Xinutop is to provide a lite, robust, fast and simple marine OS.
Quite the opposite of actuals OS, which contains a lot of softwares (some people say bloadware), partially not used or unknown by user, who will need in the future a database or seach engine to access menu, and a big processor to manage all that, I think it's more instructive & productive to dispose of an elementary and functional OS, that you know well, immediatly serviceable, and add only what you need. And your PC (as your battery !) also appreciate your system in a squashfs of ~330Mo. It's the same mind that OpenCPN. Voluntary simple and the possibility to add functionnalities trought plugins. However, for special customized versions, contact http://webcom.pk973.org for project and quotation.
It's seems that in our world it's more difficult to stay thinner than get obesity !

Next version

Bonjour à tous,

There is a new directory in Xinutop download directory called "next" where you can find some elements of the future Xinutop version (for testing).
http://marinux.pk973.org

/boot/initrd-120529.gz:
bug mount swap partition (if present) corrected

/packages/base-120529:
package update pskmail to V1.1 > the ultimate version written in perl
add gmeasure > units conversion
add muplex > merge and spilt NMEA datas from any source
add osd_depth > display depth with big fonts on OSD

* Rename without number version (as in your Xinutop)
* It's generally possible to change theses files in a running Xinutop
* Just reboot after changes

About 500 downloads of Xinutop 120501 in may
Comments and feedbacks are welcome

Re: XINUTOP Portable OS Linux marine updated

I'm trying to install Xinutop on a VIA EPIA-PD mini itx PC with via c3 processor and 1 gb ram. This is a small 12 volt powred pc that should be well suited for a onboard pc. Chipset is VIA CLE266 s3/ via unichrome graphics. VIA Embedded - EPIA PD-Series Mini-ITX Board (EOL)

When booting, I get only a blank screen when Xinutop starts to load and I'm not able even to get a terminal window. The Via Unicrome vga is known to be buggy, especially under linux, but it shoulb be possible to get it working if you are able to edit the x11 conf files. Since the Xinutop filesystewm is read only - How to integrate the VIA Unichrome driver to be able to use the VIA EPIA boards with Xinutop ??
