There are others around too.

OCPN only understands NMEA 0183 so you have to convert to 0183 for OCPN.

Re: Wireless nmea2000 to OCPN

You can use the conversion from NMEA2K via SignalK server to SignalK. SignalK has the canboat application which translate nmea2K to SignalK.

The SignalK server convert the SignalK to NMEA183 in OpenCPN.

There is allready a beta running with direct input of SignalK in OpenCPN.

The only thing you need is a canbus adapter. I'am using the Canable board. There are two versions. The board without optical protection cost around $ 35,-.

It uses only the two data cables and the output is USB.

With Linux there is an easy way to install a SignalK server. A simple install for Windows is still in the works.

I've been super impressed with the Yacht Devices NMEA2k WiFi adapter. Relatively cheap, easy to set up and OC immediately took the data once the comms were established. Highly recommended. Much more than I can say about Maretron gear ..

Bram

Would it install in Windows Subsystem for Linux, using one of the available command line Linux flavours?

I'm a big fan of Actisense gear, but the NGW converter only translates a very limited set of N2K sentences and not even including AIS!

There are different converters, but caveat emptor -- read carefully about which sentences are converted, and make sure the converter you choose, will give you the data you need!

Or go SignalK, as others have suggested.

If the OP is using Navico plotters (B&G, Simrad), he can also make a wired connection with Ethernet. That's what I use. The Navico plotters convert every useful thing out of N2K, and besides that, you can control the radar over Ethernet, allowing you to use the handy OpenCPN radar plug-in. This data stream can be made wireless if required by connecting a Navico plotter to an ordinary wifi router, by Ethernet.

Yes it does AIS... Dunno where you got that from? Hmmmm perhaps not right out of the box but it's easy enough to switch on the PGNs you want using a GUI. Mine does AIS just fine. Now running into a RPi4 running signalK and logging everything automatically to InfluxDB... Rock solid

Thanks for the correction.

Re: Wireless nmea2000 to OCPN

As a simple alternative to SignalK there is also the TwoCan plugin.

TwoCan supports a number of inexpensive CAN adapters on Windows and on Linux (including Raspbery Pi), any CAN adapter that supports the SocketCAN interface.

Simple installation & integration with OpenCPN.

They have a great concept and work well but are not very tough electronically. I got a couple of devices to test and did the kind of things my clients might do to them; broke them all very quickly.
