Re: Windows RT
The hardware might be ok, but there are clearly limits to the software...
Windows RT Is Having an Identity Crisis | Techland | TIME.com
Microsoft will launch two new versions of Windows on October 26. One of them is called Windows 8. The other is called Windows RT. While they look identical on the surface, Windows RT has a critical distinction: It cannot install desktop applications. Some desktop applications are pre-installed, such as Paint, Notepad and a stripped-down version of Office, but anything that doesn’t come from Microsoft–stuff like iTunes, Photoshop and Google Chrome–won’t run on Windows RT hardware. The only way to get new software on a Windows RT device will be through the Windows Store, a closed ecosystem of tablet-friendly apps, similar to but much smaller than Apple’s iTunes App Store.

Re: Windows RT
Plus we are dependent on wxWidgets being ported to Windows RT to be able to go there, and there is not even talk of doing that yet.
In reality, Windows RT is a completely different OS that has just the looks in common with Windows 8.

Re: Windows RT
I see wxWidgets has been ported to WindowsCE. Is it therefore possible compile a version of OpenCPN to run on WindowsCE 6.0?
Obviously the interest would be to use one of the low cost GPS units that runs under WindowsCE as a portable plotter.

It could be possible, but my experience with wxW quality makes me guess it would be a long and painful process. I don't think anyone has tried.

Re: Windows RT
That might be interesting, but wouldn't it be better to get it going on the new Windows phones and OS?
I realize that the open source code creates opportunity and interest and brings new talent and programming, which has great benefits and results in improvements to the program, but sometimes I wonder if things can get too splintered to be productive.
Just a loaded question from an unknowing person...it appears that Qt and wXWidgets are multi-platform programs that do the same thing basically. Which one is better, more reliable and current... and would it be a huge and unthinkable job to switch? -...don't want to create fireworks here. Just curious.

Re: Windows RT
Rick, Qt is way superior in all those respects. But it wasn't available when OpenCPN got started long time ago. And yes, switching is a huge task.

Re: Windows RT
I can imagine, years of programming, torn apart and parts rewritten...I wonder how much time is spent bumping up on wXWidgets limits and if it is still active and strong?
Of course it is the devil you know! Maitai might be able to give some perspective.

Linux/Unix wxGTK+, wxX11, wxMotif
OS X - wxMac (10.3 using Carbon)
OS/2 - wxOS2, wxPM, wxWidgets for GTK+ or Motif can be compiled on OS/2
