Where to get charts for the Philippines/Thailand

I have been looking around for charts for my upcoming voyage to the Philippines and Thailand, been completely unable to find charts.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I have not been able to get anything from East Asia Hydro graphic to download or work.

Well, both C-Map and Navionics have charts for chartplotters and their respective apps

Those don't work on OpenCPN do they?

You are after paper charts or electronic ones only? If paper, where is your anchor currently?

Thailand used to produce bilingual Thai/Eng raster maps in BSB/KAP. I'm unclear whether they are still available. I've not bought new ones for a decade.

No... but you didn't specify only OpenCPN. (I know, this IS the OpenCPN section....)

You can use SASPLANET and SAT2CHART to create charts from Navionics and C-MAP that will work well in OpenCPN.

FYI, I am not "advocating" for Navionics or C-Map, just giving you options.

My impression is that you can use the S-63 UserPermits from o-charts.org to license charts from a vendor like ChartWorld. However, it looks like that won't work on Android or iOS; I don't know if that would be an issue for you. It is also not cheap, although on a per-chart basis may be cheaper than paper (e.g. a 3 month term for $7-10/chart.)

For planning purpose CM93 would work (as I understand they are not updated). I used them on the west coast of Malaysia and Thailand. They are chart of the Philippines in them.

Re: Where to get charts for the Philippines/Thailand

well I have these charts for opencpn in 3 formats what I can tell you the raster ones were made I believe by the us navy in ww2.

in the philippines the chart says "heavily wooded" as I sail past a treeless brown hill with just rocks and the depths are a lot shallower than the chart

also entire islands completely missing from the chart are now sandbars

i also hit a reef which was 150 meters from where it was charted

the cm93 charts are adequate in most cases but lacking a lot of details.

the google imagery really makes it possible to navigate in almost all places if you can clearly see the reefs on it, this along with any of the older charts is all you really need.

Re: Where to get charts for the Philippines/Thailand

Terry, on Valhalla (above) provides some good info on the Philippines, including an older copy of the CM93 charts and anchorages provided by the cruising community. He's sort of a repository of info on the Philippines.

Our own website provides a brief Philippine Cruising Guide including downloadable tracks and anchorages. Our Thai Cruising Guide isn't quite so polished, but it's there (west coast only) and also provides anchorages & tracks.

We've used satellite imagery to augment our charts of SE Asia since 2014. After many requests, we've now made our Google Earth KAPs available for cruisers to download. They cover much of SE Asia, including the Philippines & the west coast of Thailand. These are extremely detailed, made at only 2000m, so they show LOTS of detail. Not only do we have a HUGE amount of time & effort invested in making the best KAPs we can, it costs us extra to host & download these big files, so we ask a donation for folks who download them (whatever the charts are worth to you).
