What size memory Raspberry Pi?

Hi, I'm thinking of dropping my laptop for a fitted in Raspberry Pi opencpn setup and I'm unsure what size memory option to take, 1,2,3 or 4Gb. I currently just run AIS and use grib files but maybe in the future fit a radar.

Any hints? I'd normally go for the biggest but there seems a significant difference in price and if big memory is not needed there isn't much point.
TIA

I.am using the RPI4 with 2 GB. This works well. But perhaps 4 GB is somewhat better.

I'am using RaspiOS 64 Bullsey version.
OpenCPN in the flatpak version with all the plugins available.

SignalK as data server.

I'am running the complete system from a fast usb 3.1 stick(Samsung) with 64 GB.

Important to have a good power supply. Not these cheap usb things.

Personally I'd go for more memory. It's not upgradeable on the RPi as far as I know, so the more powerful your hardware is, the longer you'll get before you have a reason to upgrade.

Re: What size memory Raspberry Pi?

Most folks are using the newer model Raspberry Pi's with 4GB or 8GB these days but older 2GB will work.

Looks like the prices have really gone up. A couple years ago I bought two 4GB Raspberry Pi 4 Cana Kits for $99 each.

The link below is for an 8GB board only.

I am now using my old Toshiba Laptop with Windows 10 for OpenCPN.

Re: What size memory Raspberry Pi?

I have the 8 with servo shield , cell shield, memory recording shield and charging shield on back with 2500mA back up.
I used a 3D drawing program in Linux but otherwise the pi turns on air opens a hatch two vents, two golden rod heaters, 2 cameras. The outside camera crapped out and was fine in spring thaw.

My Grandson is using a 4G to celestial navigate. At one point we had 3 on the boat at different levels of destruction. We made a dissolved oxygen sensor.
I’m not allowed to work on the boat. Laptops get thrown overboard by watch wife.
We use an iPad a Wisa box Samsung TV and BeoLab 3 for audio video. So the raspberry serves no purpose in that area either.

The single biggest problem is water proofing them so I 3D print a waterproof case for them. I’d say the only issue is fitting your own USB ends. It’s designed with two ports so a multiwire design per function.

Re: What size memory Raspberry Pi?

One example below when a RPi4 32 Buster is running OCPN and SignalK cruising with a lot AIS targets. Since I'm distanced Anydesk is running as well.
My Rpi400 64 Bullseye shows similar.

Info: Processes: 217 Uptime: 9d 11h 45m Memory: 3.82 GiB used: 1.44 GiB (37.6%) gpu: 76.0 MiB Shell: bash inxi: 3.0.32

Re: What size memory Raspberry Pi?

I used a Pi 4 w/ 2GB running Openplotter/OpenCPN when they first came out. Started with the 32-bit OS, moved to 64-bit while it was in beta. Has always worked for me. However, did relegate that to other services and now use a Pi 400 4GB. Wish they had planned the 400 to have an SSD plugged into the case (plenty of room for it with some minor design considerations). For OpenCPN I find I prefer having a keyboard around, and the 400 means fewer cables (and it’s a relatively small keyboard).

64-bit OS on 2Gb hardware is quite a waste of memory for not much benefits

Re: What size memory Raspberry Pi?

2gb is ok for opencpn, I dont think 4gb you will notice anything. 1gb will be a bit slower in many cases and 512mb is not enough.
