what is this on my opencpn chart?

hi

i apologize if this is obvious, but i haven't been able to locate the answer.

on my opencpn vector charts i'm seeing a large number of 'unidentified' objects... a magenta circle with an 'x' through, that does not report any data via an object query. i have included screenshots of the objects.

i'm using opencpn 5.6.0 on windows 11. opencpn reports that my charts are up-to-date.

i would appreciate any advice on how to get this chart data to display correctly.

thank you...

That's the "isolated danger" symbol, used to flag rocks or other hazards that are in otherwise "safe" waters as defined by your safety contour setting, but still have a depth less than the safety settings.

To add to this, if you increase your safety setting to a much greater value such that the marks are no longer in "safe" water, you should see those magenta symbols replaced by their traditional chart symbols (e.g. a rock, a wreck, etc.).

I have found that even when the isolated danger symbols were displayed, the object query was able to report the hazard. It just required scrolling down the list as it wasn't among the first few query results.

wow - thank you for the info, i'm learning a lot more about electronic navigation!

fyi it seems like in my installation the shallow/safety/deep water settings were being ignored until i did a database rebuild.

thanks again

Re: what is this on my opencpn chart?

For a complete reference of objects and symbols of ENCs there is a very recommendable publication of NOAA, their Chart#1.
For free download here:
https://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/publ...1/ChartNo1.pdf

In OpenCPN you can tailor the objects to be depicted to your personal taste and requirements using the display category "User Standard".
Manage several different standards applying "templates".

Edit: see from your other post that you did find the User Standard already...
