Re: WeatherFax ...

Rick,

And what if you make a really simple xml file containing just one server / one region ?

When you use the other plugins (weather_routing, etc), do you also experience such delays when opening the windows ?

I basically took out Passage Weather. Now everything is totally instantaneous!
No I do not see problems with weather_routing.

Is there some format problem with Passage Weather?
I need to put 1/2 of Passage Weather back and see what happens.

Re: WeatherFax ...

Took the file and cut out 1/2 of Passage Weather. Result 3-4 seconds to show Passage Weather "Regions". 3-4 seconds after select "Region" of "Straits of Malacca" to show the faxes.

Perhaps we separate it into 4 servers?
PassageWx Atlantic server
PassageWx Pacific server
PassageWx Asia server
PassageWx Europe server

3-4 seconds seem still too much.

I wonder if the duration increases in a linear way depending on the number of items, or if there is some "buggy" entry somewhere in the Passage Weather server which causes the problem.

Please do a few more tests, separate the server in four as you said, or in eight servers, and see if this improves the timings...

Re: WeatherFax ...

With respect to Passage Weather:

1. Tried complete alignment and reorganization of Passage Weather, such that
  • Weatherfaxinternetretrieval.xml Passage Weather URL were organized logically with respect to Ocean and location, ready to be divided up into separate servers.
  • Checked all xml code to see that everything was closed properly, etc. -used notepad++ View> Collapse level 1,2,3 extensively.
  • Aligned all coordinatesets in the exact same order.
  • Fixed all coordinatesets.xml and verified that they all worked properly
Tried the files out and they were still very slow. I checked one file in each region, and for Mediterranean checked each area. I fixed the coords in the med and one other url. Noticed that with the weatherfaxinternetretrieval and coordinatesets files in total alignment, that there is not a second coordinate written down at the bottom when there is a change.

This was still very slow, in fact about the same as before, perhaps even worse.
These files are in the attached pi-wxfax-pw-aligned.zip (remove the .doc)

2. Then separated the PW URL's into separately named servers.
I had to change the name in both files and save them to a new storage directory.
There are 6 PassageWeather Directories.

These files load in 3-4 seconds. Click on the Server and the Region loads in 3-4 seconds. Click on the Region and the weatherfaxes load in 3-4 seconds.
These files are in the attached pi-wxfax-pw-separated.zip (remove the doc)
---
I am wondering if the Server titles are too long and causing search problems now.
Attached Files
File Type: doc pi-wxfax-pw-aligned.zip.doc (16.7 KB, 35 views)
File Type: doc pi-wxfax-pw-separate.zip.doc (16.7 KB, 33 views)

Re: WeatherFax ...

Does anyone else here see the same problems as Rick (slowness on Windows) ?

Rick, maybe I should give you an instrumented version of wxfax, showing some timings, maybe we will be able to find out exactly where the time is spent...

If what' supposed be slow is opening the Internet retrieval dialog and going through the sources and namely Passageweather regions should be slow, then no, the operation is instantaneous on my Windows 7 VM.

Same for me, in my Windows 10 VM.

Anyone else with a low-spec computer ? (CPU and/or RAM) ?

Yes, I tried your -separate.zip version, didn't see any difference in timings in either Linux or Windows (all actions like opening the dialog, clicking on a server or a region, complete in less than a half second...).

Re: WeatherFax ...

This is very weird. So you think I did all this work on the file and it is actually my machine?

It is Win10 on SurfacePro3 with 4gb and 128gb SSD. Have optimized memory with System Mechanic, which freed up some space. Also tried disabling Norton Antivirus and Firewall, resulting in no difference in performance.

Could it be some Windows or SSD setting? SSD Drivers?
I don't notice this problem with other programs and files.
