Re: WeatherFax...
This goes along with the idea of splitting
- record wav file
- convert to image
- enhace image / overlay lat/lon
- calibrate image to show in OpenCPN
wxtoimg does steps 1-3 rather well, in the background. It knows to use 'kepplers" to start/stop the recording when a satellite is in sight.
I think programming effort would be better put into the calibration of the resulting image. First manually, to support the ever changing projection, then maybe more automatically by using the satellites position at the time of recording. Since wxtoimg is able to draw lat/lon on the picture, there must be a a way.

Re: WeatherFax...
Downloaded and installled wxtoimg and converted it to Jpeg. The program says my Keplers are out of date?
Anyway I got the attached. How do I get the locations of the corners or something?

go FILE / UPDATE KEPPLERS
then it knows the position of the satellite and can draw lat/lon lines over the image
Dirk
EDIT: I don't know the default options of wxtoimg, also check options in OPTIONS / MAP OVERLAY OPTIONS

Re: WeatherFax...
Trying attachments again...
the first pic is a split image, two images from the same region, one is visible light, the other one is IR. The other four mages are postprocessed images from the first.
EDIT: pictures seem to show in Chrome, but not in Firefox

Re: WeatherFax...
Thank you LeaseOnLife, Dirk. This has been helpful. It looks to me like for using weather satellite images, it may be best to use wxtoimg and then Weatherfax_pi to bring into Opencpn. Perhaps there is a way of calling on wxtoimg from within weatherfax if it is Windows OS.
What about the various Weatherfax sound transmissions and keeping their schedule etc? I believe Weatherfax_pi is working for Linux in that regard. We need to figure out for Windows. Does WxtoImg do this too?

wxtoimg won't do HF fax / radio fax, just SAT-WX.
I do like the HF FAX scheduler Sean has implemeted. but currently I have no SSB hardware to play with. I am on Linux, can't help much with windows..

Re: WeatherFax...
just got back to this. Found an easy method to get images from WxtoImg into OCPN and calibrate with fax plugin. WxtoImg can produce images in many projections -
In WxtoImg
produce the image in Mercator with lat/lon overlay at 5 degree spacing
save the image
In OCPN
open the fax plugin and open the image, calibrate using the overlaid grid
open GRIB file
Easy

It's not really expensive and it's a very good product. I had no problems paying for such a good tool; actually had it for years.

Re: WeatherFax...
The weather fax plugin now has a new feature. Internet retrieval. Mainly useful for weather imagery which cannot be displayed with grib files, but any images online can be supported. This can be used in addition to grib files to get a lot more weather information wherever a high-bandwidth connection is available.
I request help finding more sources for weatherfax data. I am aware of the uk, france, brazil, and japan meterological services, but didn't implement these just yet because of the changing urls. There are probably a lot more available. You can submit patches to the xml, or just post urls.
I could use some testing for this feature (as well as the automatic HF retrieval), and updated translations (for all plugins) would be helpful as well. Currently I have only french and german and both need updates.
While I am in the weatherfax headspace, additional features which could prove useful are worth mentioning, and I may be able to implement them.
Code:
git clone https://github.com/seandepagnier/weatherfax_pi
