Stay with qtVlm. It has a working weather routing while OpenCPN not.

Re: Weather Routing

Hey,
thank you so much for that plugin and all the work! I am using weather routing for some years now and there are some ideas how to improve it. Some friends and I have programming background, we checked out the github source files and tried to get an idea of how it works.
I also tried to search through this tread to find out, if there is already a solution or a workaround for our ideas. But now I am on the point of asking about your opinion.

Trying to calibrate a polar diagram for a boat I have problem that boats are sailing differently in different sea states as waves. Sailing upwind in heavy waves and wind might be slower than near the coast in less wind and waves. Or surfing downwind with waves in certain angles to waves can result in much faster boat speeds than in other angles. I am not sure if a complicated multidimensional polar or a simple slider to avoid certain solutions might be the way to go…

Can you please inform us where we can find previous work or ideas to this topic so that we can also contribute?
I found in #1096 [1] a comment of Sean on this topic but no further update.
Are there other issues we should address first?
Best regards
Georg

George, please look at Issues under Sean's repos and mine.

We are always interested in good programming help and weather_routing can certainly be improved. Sean has been focused on pypilot lately but he continues to provide help with this plugin. I am not really a good programmer but try to keep it current with OpenCPN versions.

I would suggest saving different polar files according to sea-state, so that you can use a polar file dependent on sea state. The additional piece that would be needed is an automatic change to an appropriate "sea-state" polar file dependent on the grib prediction. I haven't thought about this much, but another way to do it is to use various polar files dependent on wind range, which also include the sea-states for those wind ranges and have some kind of sensitivity adjustment to fine tune it.

Be careful of getting too detailed about this, because weather_routing is just an approximation, and the grib files are not terribly good past 6 days. However it does help for trip planning too.

Thank you for the overview! We will look into the code and hopefully contribute or get back to you with suggestions soon.

Re: Weather Routing

By the way, I didnt mention that the boat file is intended to have multiple polars, and the best one is selected based on results. You set constaints in the configuration file and can route around predicted heavy winds and large seas.

All of this is in the manual.

Weather Routing Windows Polar

Dear all,
I used the weather routing (Windows, opencpn 5.6.2 in the version 1.13.49) in combination with a Polar file (.pol) which I created with the Plugin "Polar"(1.1.30).
Since I updated Weather Routing to 1.13.51 it requested as a Polar source a .XML file! Even after deinstalling and reinstalling the older version 49 it still requests an .XML file.

If I reformat the .pol file via .csv to an .XML file, the weather routing requests still a .XML file.

Any idea, what I can do? Or is there a bug in the update?

Regards
Thomas

Re: Weather Routing

Thomas, the boat.xml file is where multiple polar file names are saved.

I suggest reading the manual and uninstalling wx_route completely and reinstalling so you have the initial settings which should allow you to create routings using climatology "out of the box". Then learn by taking baby steps.

You will find the ws-route manual from here

Re: Weather Routing

Hi,
I am trying to find out if the Routing Plug-in is available for OCPN 5.8.2 ?
I can only confirm it is not in the list of plug-in available of 5.8.2 but maybe there is another way to install the plug-in in 5.8.2 ?
Thanks

You give no OS. WR is built for 5.8.2.

Here is the Template list

So, you are using the Plugin Manager page from Options?
And you have found the button at the lower left of the screen that says "Update Plugin Catalog:master" (if it doesn't say master, it may be that you've changed the plugin catalog choice at some time in the past).

In previous versions, it used to be easy to change which Plugin Catalag you were using (so people could use a Beta version, etc) but now you have to enable the "Settings" button by adding something to your INI (opencpn settings) file.

It could be that you are using a different Plugin Catalog than the master version.

See screenshot. Windows 10 version. This just updated now. Weather Routing is there. I think it's just an xml file, so not likely to be a difference between Windows and Ubuntu for this. It is not necessarily listed alphabetically, so be sure to scroll through the whole list.

Re: Weather Routing

Hi!

I always get OpenCPN to crash if I delete a configuration while it is performing a route.

Win10
OpenCPN 5.8.2-0
WR 1.14.0.0
