Re: Waypoints Uploads OpenCPN to Garmin

But why can GPSBabel operate in Garmin mode and transfer routes and waypoints? Could code from GPSBabel show us a way of making the route transfer work from OpenCPN?

Probably..... but these are old GPS's and the whole idea was to be able to leave the Garmin in NMEA mode, feeding position data into OpenCPN and at the same time being able to upload WP's without taking it offline (changing to Garmin mode) a la MaxSea, CMap, Yeoman and others.

OpenCPN now successfully uploads multiple WP's. You can build a route from the uploaded WP's very quickly within the GPS itself. The work vs benefit of getting OpenCPN to do this for routes is IMO not worth the effort.

Re: Waypoints Uploads OpenCPN to Garmin

I'm a bit puzzled by this thread.
I have a Garmin GPS 152 that operates in Garmin protocol, not NMEA. OpenCPN accepts data from the GPS (with the preference selected) and sends waypoint and route data in the same protocol with no problems.
Are there other Garmin GPS's that don't do this?

Yes. Garmin 126 and 128 and I believe 150's do not reliably do this. Also being able to upload in NMEA mode means that you don't have to take the GPS offline and change to GRMN mode. If you have to do this the Autopilot complains about no fix and DSC radio alarms. The latest version 1108 should allow WP's to be uploaded to 152 in NMEA mode.

Of course! Our nav system is not quite that straightforward.
We have a second GPS that provides NMEA data to the radio, is a nav backup and is connected to the autopilot; but we never use it for steering.
Our main nav GPS is a USB puck that way outperforms the cockpit mounted Garmin, that we use when under way.

Re: Waypoints Uploads OpenCPN to Garmin

Five years later, I'm still having the problem described in this thread. I have a Garmin 152 GPS, I'm running OpenCPN ver. 5.5, and can't upload waypoints using NMEA. It looks good going out, but no waypoints are received at the other end:

12:36:18 PM: Opening NMEA Datastream Serial:COM3

12:36:19 PM: -->GPS Port:Serial:COM3 Sentence: $ECWPL,3751.431,N,12228.202,W,003*76
12:36:19 PM: -->GPS Port:Serial:COM3 Sentence: $ECWPL,3751.638,N,12227.161,W,004*73
12:36:19 PM: -->GPS Port:Serial:COM3 Sentence: $ECWPL,3752.321,N,12227.323,W,005*78

12:36:20 PM: -->GPS Port:Serial:COM3 Sentence: $ECRTE,3,2,c,Temp,003,004*0C
12:36:20 PM: -->GPS Port:Serial:COM3 Sentence: $ECRTE,3,3,c,Temp,005*13
12:36:20 PM: Closing NMEA Datastream Serial:COM3

This used to work in my prior version of O (I forget the version number and don't have it anymore). Did the fix described in this thread not make it into ver. 5.5?
