Waterproof monitor and androidplay - OpenCPN?

Hey all, well after having used a sihovision waterproof monitor on Isara, I'm looking to refit a local boat in the bay. I now see these (very small) 5 and 7 inch motorcycle monitors with water resistance that use android play, however I'm not sure if android play can be used with Open CPN.
Does anyone else know if that would work? It's also a low resolution screen.
Example:

cheers!

The "Android Play" seems kind of speciell?
What you need for OCPN is a pure Android OS version >=5 using Google Play to install apps. From the Amazon description this is not clear although they mention: "No need to install other apps" whatever that means?

How about asking the Amazon dealer if they would be willing to try to install OpenCPN as a test.
If they succeed they could perhaps market their stuff to a completly new market for them.
Some dealers are interested to tap into potential new markets...

You MIGHT then encounter the Mystery Marine Markup Monster, though.

Re: Waterproof monitor and androidplay - OpenCPN?

So this android play monitor is not meant to be a standalone computer - it's really just a fancy monitor (I've never used it so somewhat guessing here).

It is an OS + screen that cars have that allow android phones to play music and videos etc. It acts as a fancy screen. So I would need an android phone/tablet to "cast" to the android play monitor. Not sure if it'll work

You can get any plain Android tablet or phone, or else a Windows tablet.

etc.

There are very decent waterproof sleeves for tablets and phones that work very well if you want to use the device in rain.

There are also commercial grade IPX dropproof tablets. Imho not worth the money (they are x x the price of a plain device plus a sleeve).

Get a big device. I think 10inch and up. It is a pain to use any nav software on small screens.

I buy sh as I only use the nav device for nav, and I have always a spare at hand. They cost me USD 30 and upwards (ex-sleeve).

not sure why you want to cast to a device from a device

it is simpler to just have two devices at two locations

Plus it adds redundancy.

We have a rugged waterproof Oukitel RT1 tablet. Has built in GPS and memory card slot.
Runs Android. Got it like new, cost us less than 100€.
Works great, no need for the higher end ones.

Only drawbacks it's a bit heavy for non navigation use and could be even brighter.
But is generally daylight readable, especially after we added a non reflection screen protector film.

We built a stand and sun visor for it too.
We can quickly move it from port to starboard this way.

We run OpenCPN (CM93) and Sailgrib (MBTiles) on it.

If you want add one of these:

One drawback of sleeves is that they tend to lead to overheating. A device without sleeve is less prone to this.
