USB key dongle for oeSENC

As an alternative to license oeSENC charts for OpenCPN the option to use a USB key dongle is in place since today .



Scenarios recommending the use of the USB Key Dongle:

- Creating portable chart sets on various systems for use at different
moments as planning, underway, presenting to friends, charter…
- For systems to experiment with, modifying hardware or Operating System.
- Computers that might need to re-install the OS or system images.
OpenPlotter and Raspberry Pi are clear candidates.
- Windows 10 systems suffering from "loss of identity" after updates -
these are a small one digit percentage of the W10 install, MS will know
why. If you have suffered such a case, the dongle is a good permanent
solution.
- As an insurance for your chart sets in case the computer dies. Just do
not loose the dongle now…

The dongle is just a USB key for the charts, it is not a USB memory.
There are no charts or other information on it but the license key and
you can not save anything onto it.

Requires oeSENC 3.0.

No dongles for Android.

MacOS (Mojave, 10.14.x) is still under development and will follow later.

Can i transfer my current charts to dongle?
Did not update W10 for 1,5 years now

Transfered not:
the Dongle acts a "Portable System", one of the two instances you can use for each chart set during one year. There are no charts on the dongle, just the identification, the key.

If you have still one license to assign you can use the dongle for it.
Any combination of physical systems and dongles is doable - two PCs, one dongle + one PC, two dongles, one Android plus one dongle....

And about your W10 updates: if you run into a disaster we will always see what can be repaired if the license goes awry. Of course, if the updates happens while you are sailing, that's not that funny.

Hi Hubert, great option, the USB dongle. You state it will not yet work with MACOS Mojave but I do have the option for a USB Dongle in the eoSenc plugin (version 3.0, OpenCPN 5.0). Do I still have to wait? It would really help me!

If not ... is it wise to order one already so I'll have it when I leave for an extended trip?

It will work with oeSENC 3.0 on the platforms mentioned.

The dongle driver for Mojave is under work at the developer of the dongle.
And no, not ready yet. The dongle does not get detected in a reliable way right now.

In case you want to use the charts on a different system and you have still a free license for the dongle you create chart sets for it of course.

Just ordered 2 dongles and the new 2019 chart for my region

Some questions I have:

There is no more refresh option for expired chart?
(Not realy a problem as the charts are cheap per year)

Is there a posibility to remove old unused system identifier from my account?

Posibility to remove old expired charts?

I like to keep it clean

We are a bit overwhelmed with the orders dropping in for the dongles.
From the logistic side, to get them out of the door. Not dramatic, but don't get impatient, please.

The licensor changed the conditions for refresh sets and it does not make sense any more to offer a"refresh version" for your sets.

No, but in the latest oeSENC plug-in 3.0 there is much more information about assigned systems when refreshing your chart list.

Where? On your system? Yes, just uninstall at the chart directories. And in case delete the folder. Btw.: the downloaded zip files are in OCPN data directory.
If you want to clean up, that's another place.

No, i mean my account page on o-charts.
I bought 2019 set and the same expired 2018 set is still there.

Just a bit of positive feedback to the developers of the dongle.

I received my dongle two days ago. Used my second assigned licence for Aus oesenc, with the dongle, successfully installed chart set on Win 10, Linux mint and OpenPlotter RPI machines.

This dongle is great insurance against machine or drive failure, or major OS upgrade or change.

A great thank you to the team.

When I bought, downloadet, and started to use the oeSENC charts for OpenCPN, I used one chart set on my WIN10 laptop at the boat, and the other chart set as a backup on my Android tablet.
Now, I have ordered the dongle, and want to use my oeSENC charts on the PC in my home for planning purposes ...
Is there any way I can do this ...?
Uninstall the oeSENC charts from the tablet or the boat PC? ... OR ???

Flemming,

there is no possibility to reset or "disable" a system remotely. Once you have the charts generated and downloaded they are "out of control" from the point of view of o-charts.
If you have used your two system options - as you describe - then you will need a new license for the chart sets for the dongle.

I may try and test the Dongle with Danish charts, that I have not yet downloaded ...
