Re: USB key dongle for oeSENC

On a half way.
Functions correctly under Mojave 10.14+ here now but installing is not yet resolved for a casual user.

Re: USB key dongle for oeSENC

Just ordered two dongles assuming it now works with MacOS. Does it or am I premature?

Re: USB key dongle for oeSENC

On some system it works on others it fails. We have yet to discover why.
That's why we did not release it for macOS officially.

When installing the oeSENC plug-in (from version 3. something on) you will be asked if you want to install the dongle support.
Be patient, the install can take up to five minutes. And requires restart of the mac then after.

Fingers crossed...

Re: USB key dongle for oeSENC

I have a bit of a problem (O 5.01, oeSENC 3.3.4, SG lock V1.4): Both on macOS Catalina 10.15 beta and macOS Mojave 10.14.6:
"ERROR Creating Fingerprint File USB Key Dongle not detected".

And ... when trying to reinstall on Catalina I get: (in Dutch, I'll translate) 'Systeemextensie geblokkeerd ... Een programma probeerde nieuwe systeemextensie(s) te laden die zijn ondertekend door 'Sven Goers' en die door de ontwikkelaar moeten worden bijgewerkt."

In English: "System extension blocked. A program attempted to load new system extension(s) that are signed by 'Sven Goers' and that require updating by the developer".

I'm not worried by the second one yet - beta's tend to be difficult, CITRIX is also problematic on this beta. The first one though .. is there a way to get it to work?

Re: USB key dongle for oeSENC

rramsey...

Clearly the dongle does not work, since it requires a kernel extension, and Apple have severely limited the abilities of third-party developers to install kext files.

However, it should still be possible to create an FPR using a manually specified systemName. I would like to see your logfile for a session trying to make a new FPR.

Thanks
Dave

Re: USB key dongle for oeSENC

Here it is Dave, attached. It's a TXT log file, don't be confused by the DOC extension.

I have clicked on 'Create USB Key Dongle System ID file' forst end then on 'Create System identifier file', so you have both.

Just te be sure: the KEXT is not in the system/library/extensions directory. I understand it needs signing and notarisation. Any way I could do that myself?

And ... I could create the FPR in my WIN10 bootcamp. Still wanna use it in MacOS. Would that work?

Re: USB key dongle for oeSENC

Regarding your log file I see several problems.
Why do you use macOSX 10.15? It is still Beta and not officially released.
I do not recommend to use Catalina. Use Mojave until the dust has settled.

It is not a good idea to use files stored in a Cloud like Dropbox or Google Drive. You will have no internet at sea to reach them.
Delete the UserIcon files at /Users/robramsey/Library/Preferences/opencpn/UserIcons/
These png files have wrong colour profiles.
Your NMEA data connection has also a problem.

Re: USB key dongle for oeSENC

Dave,

Why do you use macOSX 10.15? It is still Beta and not officially released.
I do not recommend to use Catalina. Use Mojave until the dust has settled.
-> My main laptop runs Mojave - Catalina laptop is for playing ...

It is not a good idea to use files stored in a Cloud like Dropbox or Google Drive. You will have no internet at sea to reach them.
-> Works fine, files are there at sea.Need Cloud to easily share files between multiple Mac's (which is why I need the dongles too - I've bought two)

Delete the UserIcon files at /Users/robramsey/Library/Preferences/opencpn/UserIcons/ These png files have wrong colour profiles.
-> Thanks! Will do.

Your NMEA data connection has also a problem.
-> It was switched off. Also I have connections through TCP/IP and USB. Works fine.

QOUESTION: My Mac has screen resolution of 2560 x 1600 Retina. Any reason OpenCPN uses 1280x800?

Re: USB key dongle for oeSENC

rramsey...

No progress on the dongle for Mojave or Catalina yet.

However, looking at your logfile, it seems that you have created an FPR that could be uploaded manually to oCharts to assign your chartsets.

Take a look for the file:

10:26:03 CEST: oeSENC fpr file created as:
/Users/robramsey/Library/Preferences/opencpn/oc03D_1570091163.fpr

This should work for you until the dongle comes up.

Thanks
Dave

Re: USB key dongle for oeSENC

Hi Dave, I'm already using o-Charts charts using the FPR created for my Mac. I'll wait for the dongle solution then ... I've contacted the SGLock people and they seem to be confused a bit but have no solution (yet).

Thing is the KEXT needs to be signed and notorized. To make things worse KEXT's are now deprecated and only work for compatibility. There's a new system that apparently is safer but requires a rewrite.

I love Apple for being so safe ... I hate Apple for being so safe

Re: USB key dongle for oeSENC

By the way Dave and all you others responsible for OpenCPN: great work! Very nice product that is easy to use. oeSENC is also great and easy to update. USB works seemlessly in WIN10 - waiting for MacOS is no problem at all.

So ... thanx guys & gals!

Re: USB key dongle for oeSENC

Hello everyone,

to be able to use these great dongles, I am trying to update my oeSENC plugin. Since I am using Scientific Linux 7.X - which is apparently an exotic choice among OpenCPN users - I have to build my own package from source (as I am used to do). Up to now I am using OpenCPN 5.0.0 and the oeSENC plugin 2.6.0, and as I understood I need at least version 3.0.0 of the plugin.

So I cloned the GIT repository and got oeSENC source version 3.3.8. Compiling and building a RPM works without problems, but I cannot install the package because of an incompatible libc version. The reason is the contained oeserverd binary, which needs GLIBCXX_3.4.20 and GLIBCXX_3.4.21 to be defined, Scientific / RedHat 7.X offers up to 3.4.19.

Could please somebody successfully running the 3.0.0 plugin check the libc version the corresponding oeserverd binary depends on? (ldd oeserverd)

Dave, wouldn't it make sense to offer a static version of the binary? Or just stay with an not-so-recent libc version?

Thank you!

Ralph
