USB crash
Using the Mac version of Open CPN.
When I unplug the USB GPS, the program crashes AND the computer (MacBook Air) crashes. Have to restart the computer.
Is this glitch on the "fix" list?

Re: USB crash
I don't know, ask Apple and the manufacturer of the usb chip and author of it's drivers... Could you at least tell us which GPS, and how is it connected? is it usb by itself or are you using a USB/serial converter? If a USB/Serial cable using a Prolific chip is involved, save yourself the grey hair and get another one...

I am using a Globalsat BU-353 GPS, connected by USB. This puck does not crash MacENC or GPSNavX, only open CPN.

Go to View Menu, toggle option to show Library.
Pass this log over to Open CPN forum which may help......

Re: USB crash
It is a problem with all OS'es.
You cannot unplug a USB device while it is in use without some problems.
It is like pulling the carpet from under your feets.

Re: USB crash
Sorry, I am connected to Internet only by iPad. Will send the "panic" file later.

There is no problem at all involved in disconnecting a USB gps from linux or windows.
@dweller
You never mention your OpenCPN version!
Please try the latest available Mac version, OpenCPN 3.1.1319 !

Re: USB crash
And please tell us which version of OpenCPN you are using.
In this moment there is no 3.2 version for MAC available, but the
OpenCPN 3.1.1319 for IntelMac should be most probably your choice.
For MACs "Carcode" made some observations in this forum about GPS as well.
Perhaps a search might give you some track as well.
Keep in mind that there are very few applications that are covering such a "zoo" of hardware and software choices. So it is not that simple just to cry PAN PAN (and saying it's a fault of the program..).

Re: USB crash
I am using version 3.0.2. I will download the latest next time I am ashore.
Regarding crying "Pan, Pan." I cannot write code and cannot help at all with fixing bugs. If Open CPN does not want to hear from users when they have problems, they should say so.

Re: USB crash
At least on my W7 machine there is a feature on the desktop/taskbar to "Eject" USB devices before disconnecting.

Re: USB crash
Oh no, it is not about writing code - the great majority here are just user as you, with more or less experience with OpenCPN or other similar programs.
Willing to listen and to contribute.
To understand what is happening and to go to rescue the complete picture is required as always.
This is a community project, so help is at will of contributors - this project is quite famous about be very responsive.
BUT: "I have a right to get a service" - not at this counter...

Re: USB crash
The BU 353 is known not to work with Win8 as mentioned at the Globalsat website themself. The latest driver for Mac OS X is for OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard). If you have 10.7 (Lion) or 10.8 (Mountain Lion) you might have problems. Devices using the Serial/USB chips from Prolific are not the best choice. Try to find a device with FTDI chip or use a serial device together with the Keyspan adapter.
Another choice is a Bluetooth device which does not need any driver but a battery.

Re: USB crash
You're the second person to say this, but my BU-353 has worked flawlessly with MacEnc, GPSNavx, and Polar View. It is a problem only with Opencpn. I've tried unplugging it with the other programs and no problem.

Re: USB crash
So use PolarCOM and feed the data from PolarCOM to OpenCPN.

Re: USB crash
"At least on my W7 machine there is a feature on the desktop/taskbar to "Eject" USB devices before disconnecting. " And that is standard.
Devices which have been approved and qualified for the OS (Mac, Windows, whatever) will usually cost five bucks more but that compliance certification often means they work more reliably. Most USB devices, Most of the time, you can just pull them out and Most OSes will just deal with it. Most of the time. But you really are supposed to "eject" them. How elegantly they fail, depends on how well the driver was written, and you just never know except by reputation or certification.
Silly question, but is there any reason that you MUST unplug the GPS while the software is still active and running?
