ubuntu 12.04 first time installation grafical issues

Hello,

I can not configure OPENCPN 4.0.0 on my system. The toolbar is in the middle of my 15.6" laptop screen and the screen resolution might be not right. I tried to set manually to 396mm, and still the same screen.

The terminal returns this error:
(opencpn:27501): Gtk-WARNING **: gtk_widget_size_allocate(): attempt to allocate widget with width -5 and height 17

In the attachment are 2 screenshots.

What can I do?

thanks!

Re: ubuntu 12.04 first time installation grafical issues

hi petter,

I added the ppa and installed with apt-get.
Actually I have linux mint 13 maya running on a dual core Intel CPU with 2GB Ram and ATI Radeon4500 GPA. OpenGL is running, but only because I have old drivers because there are no new drivers anymore. I am pretty stuck with this software on my laptop.
1366*768px resolution

the error (Gtk-WARNING **: gtk_widget_size_allocate(): attempt to allocate widget with width -5 and height 17) shows in the terminal , if I click on any button in the toolbar.

sailor2014...
That GTK warning is no problem at all. I have also never seen this behavior before though. Which Mint flavor do you use? Cinnamon? Mate?

Re: ubuntu 12.04 first time installation grafical issues

OK, my suspicion is that you have Mate set to force every window to the center of the screen (the toolbar, etc. technically are windows)
Try the following:
  1. Go to Menu > Control Center > Personal
  2. Click "Windows" to open up "Window Preferences".
  3. Untick "Center new windows" under the "Placement" tab.
IMO this could be a bug in Mate as it should honor the application setting the coordinates explicitly for it's child windows.

Re: ubuntu 12.04 first time installation grafical issues

I will suggest that you just to sort things out try to run Xinutop from a USB stick to test if it will run fine with opencpn. On your linux pc, download a xinutop image from: http://download.tuxfamily.org/xinuto...-nav-13.05.img
find a USB stick and plug it into your pc - be sure there is no files you want to keep ond the thumbdrive - they will be deleted,,
go to a terminal window and type: df -h - and make note of the name of your USB stick.
-USB stick connected but not mounted, with only one command line: dd if=/<your download directory>/xinutop-nav-yy.mm.img of=/dev/sd<the letter of your USB stick> ex: dd if=/home/user/download/xinutop-nav-13.03.img of=/dev/sdb

When finished after a fev minutes, reboot your pc and choose to boot from your USB stick.
After booting up, you will see the open CPN start icon on the desktop , report back if everything now displays ok ??

Re: ubuntu 12.04 first time installation grafical issues

@nohal:

I cant find any option called "center new windows". any chance in GConf editor? where could I find it? so long no hit

and if i right-click on the move area of the toolbar (small area on the right of the symbols, to switch between horizontal and vertical) and click then one more time, the position of the horizontal toolbar is a little bit higher. It moves a little bit up. So maybe it is not a center windows option, otherwise the toolbar would stay in the same position?!?

@petter5:

download is almost ready. I am going to test it tonight.

I really have no idea and don't have it installed. http://www.linuxmint.com/documentati...glish_13.0.pdf talks about it as "Control Center" all the time...

Re: ubuntu 12.04 first time installation grafical issues

According to Install Mate 1.6 Desktop with MintMenu in Ubuntu 13.10/13.04/12.10/12.04/Linux Mint/other Ubuntu derivatives - NoobsLab | Ubuntu/Linux News, Reviews, Tutorials, Apps the option has been added in Mate 1.6
But before you spend too much time on it - Is your system actually opening all the new windows in the center of the screen?

What happens if you left click the "move area" and drag the toolbar to a different position..... ?

Did you evr fix this ,Sailor2014? I have exactly the same problem on a newer Puppy Linux version.
edit:
rather, almost the same. The error message is the same but in my case the toolbar disappears completely if I get near it with the mouse cursor. The only way to see it is to minimise O and then restore the window. and then sneak up on a toolbar button to use it. Trying to click on the toolbar handle to move it makes it disappear entirely.description is difficult! but it's very furtive.
( thinking on this, It might have something to do with the popup text that appears at the mouse cursor....)

But first-off, the run-in-terminal error "(opencpn:27501): Gtk-WARNING **: gtk_widget_size_allocate(): attempt to allocate widget with width -5 and height 17" is the same.
