Re: U-Blox (7) drivers

jjchev,

I've built a better roadmap at the bottom of the first paragraph with "How to's"

Getting Started - GPS Setup

Is there anything essential missing?

Man, that look terrific and I think will be very helpful. I'm printing it out so I'll be able to study it more carefully. I've read the other material at least twice but have not been able to grasp it yet. I really thank you for your help and for this "better mousetrap".

Re: U-Blox (7) drivers

The U-Blox modules do not include the Declination (Magnetic variation) in field 10 of the RMC sentence.
RMC, HDG and RMA are the NMEA0183 sentences containing that information.
Of those three, RMA is obsolete and HDG is usually generated by a fluxgate sensor and therefore, it is very rare to contain that information. Therefore the responsibility falls on RMC.
All GPS / Plotters of the usual brands contain a database with the declination in different areas of the world. Over the years, they are also outdated.
There is a gateway device that allows you to enter this data by hand, from:

https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/geomag/cal...ml#declination

I suggest that the O setup also allows it.

OpenCPN includes this functionality for many years. We also regularly update the WMM data model and software we are using.

That is great!
Very good work. Excuse me, I had not seen it yet.

Can you tell me if the calculated value of the Declination in the ship's position is included in the outgoing RMC sentences of OCPN ?.
This is necessary in the case of using a Raymarine pilot and instruments, because it uses a COG referenced to magnetic north.
(If a GPS is used as a U-Blox connected to O, that data would be necessary in order to subsequently generate and send correctly its "special COG" for both Seatalk1 and StkNG). Also other devices appreciate this information, such the Maretron SSC200 compas and SSC300 gyro.
Thank you.

Re: U-Blox (7) drivers

Sorry for the delay in responding. I've been away a few days. But, yes I would be very happy to go back through the material and make lists of questions that I still have as a new user (still not working properly), and identify areas where I think a little more detail or guidance might be helpful.

I'm not sure why I'm catching on so slowly, but the updated material you posted will help. Thanks.

Yes we need your fresh eyes and mind! Thank you.
I can also make you an editor of the wiki if you wish. Just PM me with your email and username. Thanks.

Re: U-Blox (7) drivers

I'm just going in circles trying to get u-blox GNSS sensor and Open CPN to work. Originally I had downloaded/installed the u-blox drivers and was getting the dialog box on my screen, and was getting lat/lon info.

Then, I decided I may not have done everything right so I uninstalled the drivers and have tried numerous times to reinstall them. But, now I cannot even get that done. I have OPEN CPN installed, have read the material you developed but am at a stand still.

I think I'm being confused by a few different posts on installing the drivers. So, can you please give me specific directions on where to find these and how to properly install them as a first step.

Thanks so much. I want to get this working in the worst way.

Remove the GPS drivers.

Get it to this point and then tell us.

Now since things aren't working, we need to be sure all those drivers are uninstalled and then reboot the computer.

How to uninstall the drivers?

  1. Disconnect your GPS with the machine shut down! Otherwise this won't work.
  2. Look at this screen shot of the Device Manager. You can get there several ways, including a search.
  3. https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/li...connection.jpg
  4. See the U-blox drivers under sensors ? There are 3 of them. I think you want to uninstall all of those by right clicking and finding uninstall drivers.
  5. Start with the lowest one "U-blox 7 GPS Gsnns" .
  6. Then try to uninstall the other two as well.
  7. Then reboot and check the Device screen when you've rebooted make sure there are no drivers.
  8. Now clean up your machine as you would normally do.
  9. With no extra software running.
  10. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation.
  11. Get the Gps showing with the U-blox Center.
  12. Close the U-blox Center.
  13. Leave us a message at this point. Don't try anything else.
  14. I or someone else with instruct from there.

Re: U-Blox (7) drivers

I deleted all of the drivers, rebooted and cleaned the machine with ccleaner. But I am not finding where to go to get drivers needed and instructions for installation.

That is good Clint. I can't believe you asked that question!
Use Terry's great link that he shared, or check out this link you are familiar with!!!

https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...rted:gps_setup

Actually I would prefer that you follow our link, because I want to know if our instructions and process is clear.
Your Manufacturer is U-Blox, which link should you pick?
Please walk through this and let me know what we should change in that page! It will help others who follow.

PS: After you get the drivers installed. Verify that the GPS is working with their software "U-center" and note the Com Port number. Then turn it OFF. Opencpn will NOT see your GPS Device com port if it is being used by another program!!!!! Is that Clear?

PS: I have never installed u-blox drivers, but the process and concepts are all similar. Get the concept, then read the manuf. instructions!!
