Tides & Currents - Where? Plus Missing Button

I had an unrecoverable crash after which OpenCPN 2.5 would not start, so installed v3.0 over it (fresh install). Panasonic CF-51, WinXP SP3. Everything seems to work now but I can't for the life of me remember/figure out where the 'harmonics' data is supposed to go for the Tides& Currents feature.

I have it in c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\opencpn\UserTCData
and the files in that directory are HARMONIC (2417KB) HARMONIC.IDX (70KB)

In OpenCPN toolbox under the Settings tab, the "Tides & Currents - Harmonic dataset to use" dropdown box only shows default dataset...

Have I got it in the right directoy location? If so how can I point OpenCPN at it?

I also downloaded v3.0.2 and looked at the Tides and Currents section of the FAQ, which describes the process thus:

Go to Toolbox->Settings->Tides & Currents and press the "Tide/Current Datasets.." button. The dialog on the picture above will pop up.

Sadly I can't find such a button on the toolbox>settings page, just a drop down box which only offers Default Dataset.....

I'm sure it's there somewhere, but where?

Thanks,
Andy

Andy...

Sorry for your crash....

Do you want to use the default Tide/Current dataset? These are found in c:/Program Files/OpenCPN/tcdata.

Re: Tides&currents - where? plus missing button

Hello Dave,
Thank you so much for your fast response! I'd like to use the files called "harmonics" and Harmonics.idx which I was using before. Thy worked well for me. I have the files, I just don't remember where to put them or how to point OpenCPN at them. And I have been using this program since leaving the UK three months ago so since I have found it better than excellent I reckon I should donate - how? Paypal?
Thanks
Andy

Andy...

Aha, I see.

Put your two new HARMONIC files in c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\opencpn\UserTCData\MyData.

Then you should see MyData in the dropdown box, along with default.

The Online documentation is a little bit ahead of the 3.0.2 Release, amazingly.

Paypal works, thanks

Hi again,

I made a folder called mydata in c:\.......UserTCData\ and put the harmonic files in it but it still doesn't show in the dropdown box... only default. I could be being spectacularly dim but ... what else could be wrong? I restarted cpn after putting the files in the folder...

Do you have your UserTCData in the same directory as your opencpn.ini file ? It should be! FAQ | Official OpenCPN Homepage.
The name of the tidal files should be HARMONIC and HARMONIC.IDX .

Andy

Strange! Can we have a look at your logfile?

Meanwhile, there is a little trick! Rename the default HARMONIC and HARMONIC.IDX. Stick a ".orig" at the end for example. Then copy your files to the same directory. I used to do that all the time in the "old days".

The path is in the About OpenCPN window, "?" button on toolbar.

Andy...

The HARMONIC and HARMONIC.IDX must be in a subdirectory of UserTCData, such as this sample directory name:

c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\opencpn\UserTCData\MyData

It is the "MyData" that will appear in the drop down list.

Hi,

The path is just as you have written it, Dave; I'll do a screenshot and post it hopefully later today,
Thanks,

Still waiting for the log file!
Can you zip up the harmonic files and attach them here.
Add a .doc to the end of the zipfile.
I just want to check that they are OK.
