Stupid Question About Garmin Radar Interface

In the documentation for the Garmin radar overlay, it refers to the cat5 output of the "radar scanner".

Is the radar scanner the actual radar unit (i.e. a Fantom 18, etc), or an intermediate piece of hardware (like the Simrad RI-12 module, but for Garmin)?

The "scanner" is the part mounted on a mast that goes round-and-round.
No stupid questions when it comes to technology and its sometimes obtuse terminology...
