Hey--I do agree. Especially to what's left here of your post. And I also do a lot of: "F2" to see where I am and "L" if the chart is suddenly crowded with lights. The rest are more or less forgotten when stressed.

Re: Shortcut Keys List

We should all unplug the mouse for awhile and see how it goes.

I'd be fine with single letters if they just did ENC/cm93/Vector chart operations.

The buttons are on the limit size wise (and I don't have big fingers), but even with a pen instead of the fingers it is no fun at all to set a mark or to outline a route. Works much more precisely with a mouse.
Would like to see this on a 10" tablet...

Btw.: took some time to realize that right-click is just a looong touch
The loooong touch can be shortened (in XP anyway) but on a bouncy boat it is hard to keep the stylus steady looong enough.

I would like to see a single key press that simulates the (mouse) right key press. This is especially important as there are many commands that are in the right press menus that don't exist elsewhere.

I think this is a keeper suggestion. What about a right key too?

What is your experience in rough weather? How can the shortcuts help?

Re: Shortcut Keys List

The right click commands have shortcuts.

MoveBoatHere is Right-click,M,M, ENTER
NavigateToHere is Right-click, N
HideThisChart Right-Click,H
but these need the mouse cursor in position and are kind of dumb as keyboard operations if you already have the mouse in your hand (or what passes for it in a tablet).

Re: Shortcut Keys List

It would be nice to assign hot keys to a group of charts to switch vector - raster
Vector-V
Rastr - R

Happy, the point I tried to make is:

1. A right click is difficult on some (maybe most) tablets. You must hold the pen down for (1-2) sec and not let the point move even 1 mm, This is next to impossible on a bouncing boat.
2. There are some commands that are only available thru right click menus that one might want to use on a dark and stormy night. e.g. Right click on an AIS target.

I don't know if all key presses are available to Ocpn, but Insert or Escape could candidates for an alternate Right Click.

Re: Shortcut Keys List

oh, I got it alright,WD -I just don't have a tablet so can't speak toparticularsof them...apparently you have some kind of keyboard so
INSERT would be good,eh? ok with me-I forget it's there!

but ESC is too useful everywhere ,and is used ending route too.

"It would be nice to assign hot keys to a group of charts to switch vector - raster

".
I wouldn't mind this either. But maybe just use "V".. tap V when in rasters and you goto vector charts...tap V when on Vector charts and you goto rasters..a "cycling" key.

A customizable toolbar would be a really great feature. Users would be able to easily add URLs, scripts etc easily without getting into writing plugins.

Re: Shortcut Keys List

This thread and the Touch Screen thread is getting more serious and the subject deserves a separate "Tracker/Flyspray" Project Listing.

I propose calling the Tracker Project:

"Shortcuts & Touch Screen"

Both threads come to some definitive conclusions it should be posted in the project.
The two threads are:
Optimized for Touch Screen This one
Shortcut Keys List

The new Tracker Project:

Shortcuts & Touch Screen

Improvements to the interface for Useability and Touch Screen
1. Objective
2. Constraint
3. Priority
4. Shortcut Detail
5. Touch Detail
6. Conclusion

Please use the above categories if possible.

I think there are big picture items that should be listed in Tracker now.
Lets try to focus on those big picture items as a first priority, and have focused discussion on those items under tracker.

Then we can start to get into details.

Note: I am hopeful that the "Shortcuts" side of effort will accept the additional constraint/requirement that the shortcuts accommodate Touch Screen in whatever way is reasonably possible. So contributors should read both threads!

Re: Shortcut Keys List

um...
so how exactly would keyboard shortcuts "accommodate" a touch screen that by definition has no keyboard?
and why would a powerful computer "accept the constraints" of a peripheral device that the tablet is?

Re: Shortcut Keys List

Happy, good questions that we do not yet know the answer to yet, ... but we need to figure it out! maybe there are several ui modes in the settings menu, maybe macros and shortcut settings are changed in the opencpn settings menu...but what is needed for each type of device? how do we improve the interface for all?

Re: Shortcut Keys List

well, I see that Pavel has made a plugin so buttons can be customised
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ml#post1415022

The above would seem to help a tablet

It will also please "Them-As-Like-Extra-Buttons-to Chase-With-a Mouse"...

Otherwise, I fear the two objectives (tidied-up "Keyboard Shortcuts" and whatever improvements a "Touch screen" UI wants) cannot be logically combined.

Happy,
Perhaps you're right, but what if we had an on screen button that accessed a short list of user selected short cuts. Keyboard, mouse and touch access to the same features.

I've been using OpenCPN for three years and don't use shortcuts at all because I have the memory of a fish. Other than the issue of precision there doesn't seem to be a lot of difference between the mouse and the finger. Also a mouse can't "pinch"; but my point is you would have to go out of your way to create functionally different interfaces for tablet and laptop.

It sounds like tablets have access to short cuts through a soft keyboard. My guess is that users won't use this much; but if you gave them a simple button access, they might.

Re: Shortcut Keys List

Hi,WD'... OH! I liked the idea of configureable shortcuts when Rick mentioned them! great idea!
one key to get the menu, another key invokes the shortcut... Hey, gimme! for sure.
Maybe Pavel can do it in his plugin or something. We can find LOTS for other people to do, eh?
But a lot of work to add this feature maybe...?
And there's an adequate selection already. They are just messy is all.
I thought we were just going to tidy 'em up?
Keyboard shortcuts have an advantage, especially one-handed ones, while fiddling with a mouse while braced in a rocking, heeling boat is goofy.
Tablets (ideally) share the advantage but in a different (entirely!) fashion... as a path of single touches.
... therein is the question. How would I know what tablets are like? I'm just making it up...
oh, I had a touchscreen laptop before ...before Bill Gates announced they were the future...before Apple reinvented it a year after Bill said that and did nothing...? but it was a fail for me. Lying flat, I can't see it and it flies around unless velcroed or something. On a stand, I need to steady it to touch it. hang it on a bulkhead? well I prefer the ol laptop.
