Serial Ports in linux mint

Hi
Having just changed from windows to linux I dont seem to be able to find or select a data port (Com1) to send GPS data to. All worked well in xp and I have used the software for several years so am conversent with the setting up etc. Is there a Linux Guru out there who can throw some light on the subject. I am pretty new to Linux mint so I expect to get an obvious answer.

You have not said what kind of GPS device you want to use (USB, serial, Bluetooth). However the OpenCPN manual is your friend. Look at:

Re: Serial Ports in linux mint

Hi
Thanks for the reply
The GPS is a MLR FX312 sending data at 4800 baud rate to com1 port via a serial cable that all works with windows
The port options in OpenCpm Linux version are greyed out so there is no chance to use the pull down box to select the port. I am not sure that the port is available in mint It would be nice to test the port like with Hyper Terminal or the Linux version. I would then know if the problem was with Mint or Cpn

regards

Re: Serial Ports in linux mint

starcatcher...
1) Read the manual, really. The working of serial ports and GPS connection is really different on Linux
2)
Code:
sudo usermod -a -G dialout $USER
3)
Code:
sudo apt-get install minicom

Re: Serial Ports in linux mint

Thanks for your input.
I have studied the manual and am now more confused than when I started. I would like a plain English explanation of how to configure the com port for Linux Mint as it would seem that some of the commands for other systems do not work in Linux.

regards

Re: Serial Ports in linux mint

The same in English:
Add your user to the dialout group so it has access to the serial ports.
Make sure nothing else, like gpsd is using the port
Install minicom
Run minicom to have a look what, if anything, is coming in on the port where you connected your GPS
Pretty much nothing you know from Windows will work on Linux exactly the same way, obviously
More information in English is for example at How To Check and Use Serial Ports Under Linux
We need to know way more about what you already did and what does not work to help you.
