Serial GPS connection not working

I'm using a BU353S4 GPS on a Netbook (Windows 7) running OCPN V 5.10.2.0
The NMEA debug window shows I'm connected to the correct COM Port but the Ownship icon is Grey indicating no GPS signal.

The GPS works fine on a laptop (Windows 10) running OCPN V 5.8.2.0

Any suggestions?

Re: Serial GPS connection not working

A few suggestions:

1. Does the NMEA debug window also show NMEA-sentences coming in? (adding a screenshot might be useful for us to help you).

2. Give the GNSS-receiver plenty of time (10 minutes or so) to get a fix and make sure the receiver has an unobstructed 'view' to the sky (preferably out in the open air, so not indoors).

3. In Dashboard, add 'GNSS Status' so that you can see if -and how many- satellites are found and if the signal-strength is sufficient.

Re: Serial GPS connection not working

1. Yes, the NMEA debug window is showing NMEA sentence coming in.

2. I took the computer outside the house and it worked! Brilliant! Why didn't I think of that? My house has a steel roof, so that was the problem. I don't have this problem on the boat.

3. I checked the GNSS status and can see the satellites found.

Thanks for helping out!

Re: Serial GPS connection not working

Also, unless you'd have a UDP connection either a GNSS software buffer, don't use the same COM signal for two apps in the same computer, it will work only one or none.
