Re: S63_PI Beta Test 0.5.0

Hubert,

I have send to you already the 26. of April a mail and wrote to you what is wrong with fingerprint. It seems you have not received it.

Gerhard,

what you pointed out in your mail with reason is the usability - the issue that OS-X drops the executable bit of the fingerprinter when downloading it.
This is a nuisance for the user, and yes, it it would be interesting to find a solution for this.
We found a quite simple 3-step way how to revert the -x option, but even this might be still a challenge for unexperienced users.

What I'm worried about is the reported segfault, that we can't reproduce here.
So the question is, if anybody else had this error.
The fingerprinted builds and executes without errors or warnings.

Re: S63_PI Beta Test 0.5.0

The OS-X user with the SEGFAULT executing the fingerprinter upgraded his system to Mavericks/10.9.2 and the problem is gone.

We have now the first OS-X user with S-63 charts near to Gibraltar...

Re: S63_PI Beta Test 0.5.0

Hello Dave,

I have at my disposal a non official beta version of O. This is the version of 331710.

I tested the s63, V05. It seems to work correctly.

However:

I observed that the light sectors appear correctly when I put the mouse over a light. This is normal.
But when I remove the mouse, the light sectors do not cease to appear. This is not normal.

B.R., Gilletarom.

Re: S63_PI Beta Test 0.5.0

I am concerned about the reliability of the CATZOC (= quality of) data in Opencpn on the S63 charts I have bought.
The French Hydro Service (SHOM) pride itself on having accurately labelled the various zones. But on my charts, the CATZOC are always 6 (data not assessed).
I know that this is not true from the fairway leading to the great military harbour of Brest, which nuclear submarines and our aircraft carrier use regularly.
Could this point be investigared further ?

Sorry, I have found an area where the quality is known... So probably, Opencpn is OK

In case somebody finds incorrect data in the future:

we have been approached by ChartWorld informing us that they would like to see a feedback in those cases. They will investigate and channel this information back to the chart producer.

Re: S63_PI Beta Test 0.5.0

Just have a look at your ChartWorld account.
It's well possible that there are already updates available.

The mail "no updates are available" is just misleading.

Dave and ourselves received the same mails during the testing period of the charts from ChartWorld we had to play with.
And it showed that one should have a look periodically each Tuesday or so to fetch updates.

Re: S63_PI Beta Test 0.5.0

What is going on with S63 plugin?
Last development is more than 3 months ago and no stable release right now.
There are still some weak points in the code, e.g. see attachment.

Any roadmap available?

Re: S63_PI Beta Test 0.5.0

Will be updated in the course of the next beta release of OpenCPN.

In the meantime we identified some issues with the Linux version and the chart set from AHS helped as well to identify some bottlenecks.
And we learned about different ways of releasing updates when compared with ChartWorld.
Updates are not defined thoroughly in the S-63 standard which leaves some room for surprises.

Australian users contributed some ideas about where to place the SENC directories in oder to have a better understanding and solutions to differentiate which information is system/PC related and which is user/account related.
This is relevant in multi-user environments like colleges or universities.
New scenarios for OpenCPN where we usually just had single installations.

In the S-63 case the majority of users is communicating their inputs via the o-charts.org site, so that we don't see here at the forum what is going on.
A drawback from the requirement to fence the S-63 plug-in.

But we know that quite a bunch of users are sailing with S-63 charts.

So just keep tuned!
And thanks for the code review..

Hubert,
there are more than 12 OCPN betas right now, more than for any stable release before. So I suppose we will not even see a stable OCPN this year.
The sailing season in northern Europe ends soon...

Re: S63_PI Beta Test 0.5.0

Hello,

I have, on my side, had the opportunity to say how much the absence of new stable version for O is a disaster. On the French forum, we no longer talk of OpenCPN except for complaining about the difficulties involved to make it work with some GPS .....

Such is life ...

Best regards

By the way I have found 14 other weak points beside the one I have posted above in S63 plugin.
