Running OpenCPN on Inexpensive Hardware

I am considering installing a dedicated OpenCPN machine on my Catalina 30 (in the cabin), and this linux all in one system looks too sweet to pass up. I understand OpenCPN has minimal hardware requirements, has anyone used hardware like this (Chumby)? It's only 70 bucks after rebate!

  • 800MHz processor
  • 2GB memory
  • 8" LCD touch-screen display
  • 7-in-1 media reader
  • 2 high-speed USB 2.0 ports
  • Built-in high-speed wireless LAN (802.11b/g)
  • Chumby (Linux 2.6) operating system preinstalled
Heck, I'd consider trying to but it in a watherproof box and mount it by the helm (but I won't).

I am using OpenCPN with Ubuntu 10.10 on an old Sony Vaio 750MHz, 325MB RAM. It is SWEET!. It is less responsive to dragging chart positions than my more modern Fujitsu 1.4GHz 2GB machine running W7 but perfectly usable. Give it a go. I think you will be well pleased.
