Recover deleted track?

I accidentally deleted a track and wish I hadn't. Is there any way to recover that track?

If you didn't restart "O" to often afterwards you can.

In the same directory/folder as the config-file (press ? button to find) there are 6 navobj files: navobj.xml, navobj.xml.1, navobj.xml.2 ......

1. First copy these files to a save place.
2. Then rename "navobj.xml.5" into "navobj.xml".
3. start "O" and check if your track is there, if yes export your track stop O and replace all xmlfiles by the copies you saved before. Start O and import the track. If no, sorry sail the track again

Thanks! Is navobj.xml.5 the most recent backup, or the oldest? I'm asking because I may have created the track between closings of O.

Also, is this documented in the Help file? If so, where? If not, why not? I'd be happy to write this up if you like.

The oldest is navobj.xml.5.

If the track was in a file, try normal recovery tools for files. Do not delete nor write anything to the drive meanwhile.

I tried the fix from RooieDirk to recover lost tracks. First saved the .xml files to a new folder. Then before changing the name of navobj.xml.5 deleted navobj.xml.
Did not recover the lost track this way but recent new Routes were lost after I put the old saved .xml files back in place. Any suggestions?

As you have saved all the navobj files, try navobj.xml1 - this is the most recent one.
xml5 is the sixth generation (xml(0) --> xml5)

More: The xml files are user readable. Open it with a decent editor like Notepad++, not with the Windows onboard Notepad, and you can cherrypick routes and tracks and copy them back into the actual xml file.
But be sure what you are doing! Always with a back-up at hand.

If you have no luck with xml files you might have another choice to look in your opencpn.log file for lines like that:

LOGBOOK: 2016-06-27 07:34:11 UTC OFF: Lat 52.49628 Lon 9.83351 COG 2.41000 SOG 0.37 kn

Such lines are written each half an hour in the log.

Tried your suggestions and learned something again but no luck in retrieving the track. OpenCPN really crashed while I was reorganizing tracks and the ones I was working on completely disappeared. Nothing to do about it.

Just stumbled on this thread and tried same with no joy

I was trimming the end off the track and OpenCPN crashed when deleting the snipped off bit and deleted the whole track, not just the trimmed bit.

VERY disappointed as this track is the first one I have managed to do up the inside of Fraser island and through the crossover without the 5ft under keel shallow alarm shrieking on our 2.4m draft vessel.

Even more impressive was that we did the whole 21nm run with zero vis under radar due to heavy fog this morning.

Very impressive, Simi 60! I reckon you would have found a market for that track.

My best run through the GSS was following deep keel race boats returning to Moreton Bay after the Brisbane-Gladstone. The delivery crews drove the engines hard and were great to follow.

Kudos for doing the run under radar in fog. That's an additional level of difficulty.

don't start OpenCPN again.


First before restarting:

copy the back-ups of the navdata.xml files in order to use those to recover the track.


There are 5 generations of back-ups and each time you start OpenCPN you will roll one generation forward.


Take the the copy of Gen1 for example and copy it back as the original main navdata.xml and observe if the track is there. If not, proceed with the former generations 2..5
