Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

Can this plugin be used if I buy JUST a garmin radar but no MFD or anything else?

Yes. None of the supported radars require an MFD.

BUT we don’t support modern fully digital Garmin radars like Fantom. If you want a stand-alone radar your best bet is a Navico 3G, 4G or HALO. These are modern fully digital radars, use less than half the power and perform much better than the supported Garmin radars.

This won’t change until someone with a modern Garmin radar steps up and starts co-developing.

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

The crash in the radar selection window on Linux and possibly MacOs has been fixed in v5.0.5.

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

Is it possible to match the scale of the map to the radar range when the radar PPI window is docked ?

Vesta..
There's no way radar_pi can adjust the chart zoom level.

The other way is, as you may know, possible. A radar overlay range in auto will follow your charts zoom level. Also for the PPI window.

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

Hi everybody.
I am having an issue with the new radar plugin. Till last week I always used opencpn 4.8 on Ubuntu 16 and the old br24radar plugin with a Navico 3G antenna. Never a problem, great piece of a program!

Then I had to reinstall the OS on my pc, always ubuntu, 18 now. I then installed opencpn 5 from the ppas (as described in the manual), and after a few tentative steps, managed to download the opencpn-plugin-radar (the online documentation in some parts still mentions the old br24radar, that I could not find).

Now, new opencpn, new plugin... the radar plugin, when enabled, ask me what kind of radar I am going to use. If I select Navico BR24, 3G, 4GA or 4GB the whole opencpn crashes. The error message in terminal is "Segmentation Fault (core dumped)", nothing more. If I select Garmin HD, xHD, Navico Halo A or B, it works (but I do not have those antennas...). I installed opencpn 5 and the radar plugin on three different PCs, all of them running differents versions of ubuntu, but the result is always exactly the same. Has anyone any idea? Is it possible at least to revert to opencpn 4.8 and the old br24radar? I tried it but found no information on the web.

I do not have a Navico display for the radar, so I really need the plugin to work...

Many thanks, I look forward to your replies.

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

Stefano..
This will be solved although I'm not the most experienced Linux user.
The radar_pi has advantages compared to the previous BR24radar_pi. The problem you describe would be solved so I suppose you have an old version.
What I did on my Ubuntu 18.04: (Sorry if I'm to basic below but it's my level.)
I used Synaptic to manage the ppa packages. (sudo apt update. sudo apt-get install synaptic)
In settings->Repositories->Other software Add: ppa:opencpn/opencpn Close and reload
Mark opencpn and radar-pi for installation. Install these packages.

After that I got a radar-pi that works. Goto to radar-pi preferences and select your radar type.
Note for the BR24 type: If you have a firmware after Oct 2014 you should select the 3G type otherwise the BR24. (The firmware is reported in the radar Info window once connected)
For a wiki for this release see also here: https://github.com/opencpn-radar-pi/radar_pi/wiki

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

No luck with that try...
Opencpn and the radar plugin were the newest versions already. Anyway, I removed them completely and reinstalled through synaptic, as suggested. Opencpn is the 5.0.0-0~bionic1 and opencpn-plugin-radar is version 5.0.4-0~bionic1.
Opencpn still crashes as soon as I select Navico BR24, 3G or 4G in the radar type selection box.
Any further suggestion?
Thanks again for your time
Stefano

Don't worry! This should work. I will get my Ubuntu system going tomorrow and take a look.

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

Of course you can overlay the radar image on a chart. At the scale chosen for the chart.

Re: Radar plugin v5.0.0 released

So I will still be able to see my navaids AIS targets, depths, etc?

Also as I haven’t bought my radar yet, what’s the hotness on a 18” mast mount?
