I read your previous posts and I am beginning to wonder if the scanner has any power. Are you able to check if it's got 12V.

I had the thought a time ago. So I borrowed a Garmim plotter to test the function (see earlier post) and it worked perfectly. The radar needs 36 volts, on board we have 24 volts. The radar came with a converter that accepts 12-36 volts as input and provides 36 volts. Interestingly, when the radar is in sleep mode, it only provides the 24 volts on board and only switches to 36 volts when it switches to run mode.
Maybe it needs another signal besides pin 5 to switch to run mode?

This is unfamiliar to me. My radar is only fed with 12 V. Possible range is 11-35 according to the installation manual.
Perhaps the xHD2 is a different beast and if so you or someone else needs to take a look at the how the radar works in a more fundamental way.

Is there anyone out there that's got a Garmin xHD2 working with radar_pi ?

Wow, this is all so exciting. Looking to use only OpenCPN for our ships needs.
Hoping to wait it out till the radar plug-in works with the Furuno 1st Watch Wireless Radar DRS4W. But otherwise trying to find the smallest radar dome that works with the current plug in. Thanks for a great group. It's always fun to stand on the shoulders of giants.

Waiting does not help very much, unless some Furuno radar owner decides to add his radar to radar_pi.

I'll do it. I'll buy the wireless Furuno DRS4W and add it to the radar_pi.
Thanks for a great group. Click here for a beer.

Great. Note that you will need access for at least a few months, and preferably permanently, to some Furuno equipment or software so that you can overhear how the control messages work and how the 'report' messages and 'data' messages are formatted.

We'll see you on github ...

Re: Radar plugin 5.2.1 released

I was running opencpn version 5.5 with the latest radar plug_in on Ubuntu 20.04 and it was working fine up until a little over a week ago. Then when I started the application within a minute of the radar plug_in running the application freezes up and I have to reboot.

I rolled back to opencpn 5.2.4 and the same issue persists.

I also experience this on Ubuntu 18.04. I didn't pull any updates so I'm at a loss as why this has started occurring.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Radar plugin 5.2.1 released

If nothing have changed on the PC or the program/apps it may be something outside like the radar scanner itself?
For a small test you could disconnect the radar scanner and use the radar type "Emulator" to test basic program functions?

Re: Radar plugin 5.2.1 released

Thank you for your reply. I tried running the emulator and it will freeze up the application as well.

I tested it a few times the first time, it temporarily seemed to freeze up the GUI but then it recovered. Then I tried the Halo A radar and it froze up. Returning to the emulator after restarting the virtual machine also resulted in the GUI freezing up.

It may be something with the virtualbox vm that I'm running Ubuntu in. But this is how I have been running it when it worked so I'm at a loss as to what might be causing this.

Re: Radar plugin 5.2.1 released

I was able to install and run the plugin on another PC that is running Ubuntu natively. So I believe that there is something with my VMs that is causing the issue.

Re: Radar plugin 5.2.1 released

John..
Good to hear about no radar or radar_pi failure. Thanks for the report.

Ubuntu and VM is not my "table". I'm mostly on Windows and RPi. Others may have more to add?

Re: Radar plugin 5.2.1 released

So I figured out the issue. It was related to the VM. I had experienced an error when trying to restart my VM a little while back and the fix was to select a different graphics controller.

At first I thought that the GUI freezing up was a processor or RAM issue with the VM, but after throwing more resources at the issue nothing was helping. Then I remembered that I had changed the graphics controller.

I reverted the changes back to VBoxSVGA graphics controller and the radar plug in works perfectly and doesn't freeze up the user interface.

I wanted to get back and let others know if they are running in a VM and experience this issue to check the graphics controller.

Good news and thanks again for your reports.
Stepping back through made changes is often a successful method.

All, I have stability issues (opencpn freeze) when enabling ARPA targets (Guard zone) with radar_pi 5.2.1 (Ubuntu 20.04). Radar: Navico Halo 20

The radar works perfectly without ARPA enabled. Here's the logs prior it freezes:
