Radar Pi remove compass integration

Hi all,

I am running Radar Pi on OpenCPN with a windows tablet. The software seems to be getting 2 conflicting headings from my nmea data and is flashing back and forth in both the radar dedicated screen and the OpenCPN interface. Don't know how to prevent that from happening, but I really don't need the compass integration for the Radar Pi.

So my question is this: Is there a way to disable the compass heading integration in Radar Pi and simplify the display? I'd rather have it just show a bow up view of my surroundings in the dedicated screen.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Radar Pi remove compass integration

The first and easy answer: Take out the false heading from the incoming NMEA0183 stream.
Your ship symbol in OpenCPN would be turning as well I suppose?
If you have two heading sensors could you correct the bad one or shut it down?
Is it possible to filter out the bad HDM/HDT/HDG sentence from the NMEA stream?

A copy from the NMEA Debug window or a VDR-file for a couple of minutes would help us to look further into you data if you need that.

Next.
Radar_pi: "..the dedicated screen." I suppose you mean the PPI window. If you use only that, in head up mode, and not "Chart overlay" you need no heading. But if you receive a heading, bad or good, into OCPN it will be used.

Happy to post that, but my ignorance may be showing. Is there a tutorial on where/how to find the vdr-file or debug window?

VDR...
In plugin manager install plugin VDR.
Two buttons in the tools menu. "Record" and "Play".
When O is running with incoming data as normal:
Click "VDR Record". Save the file where you will find it. Name it something.txt. - OK.
When you have recorded some minutes, click "VDR Record" again to stop it.

To overcome CF rules about file size rename the file to something.txt.pdf
Post the file here; "Go Advanced" => "Manage Attachment"

Attached are the debug screens that were recorded while we were getting 2 different headings, causing the radar to be all over the place.

Have you tried the "Ignore radar heading" tick-box in the Advanced->Preferences?

Re: Radar Pi remove compass integration

There are three NMEA0183 messages containing a heading: xxHDM, xxHDT and xxHDG. (More about what's in the messages here.)
Looking in your NMEA Debug copy you can see the differences. (In the NMEA Debug Window you can set a filter, e.g. HD, to sort the view for a better readiness.)
Find the correct one and try to get rid of the false.

You can see from where these headings are and maybe "cut the bad wire".

The "virtual" source (e.g.: 10:13:37 (Virtual $APHDM,232.094,M*3D<0x0D>) are from a OCPN plugin like VDR, NMEA converter or radar_pi. I can't guess which plugins you're using but if it's radar_pi check its preferences and maybe enable/disable "Ignore radar heading" or "Pass radar heading to OpenCPN" to test what's happening.

Filter out a sentence:
In Options=>Connections you can set a filter for each connection. If "TCP:192.168.14.1:20220) $APHDM,232.094,M*3D<0x0D><0x0A>" is the bad one select that connection and enable "Ignore sentences" and by the three dots menu to the right "clear all" and select "HDM"
