question about radar integration

hi

i'm upgrading my radar unit - my plan is to upgrade the antenna array, and to display the output in opencpn (with no other dedicated chartplotter or radar display).

i have an autopilot with heading sensor (simrad) that already works with opencpn and provides heading data to the software.

will opencpn be able to take the output of a broadband radar and display it as an overlay using the heading data from the autopilot heading sensor? or will i need to purchase a new heading sensor with the radar?

i would also appreciate suggestions for which radar to purchase, specifically regarding ease of integration and management with opencpn (when there is no dedicated radar display).

thank you...

Re: question about radar integration

I have a similar (not exactly the same) setup to the one you are enquiring about - I have Raymarine instruments supplying NMEA 0183 data to OpenCPN on a Linux computer in the salon over WiFi via a YDWR 02 Seatalk<>NMEA0183 converter. That all works great.

I found a Garmin GMR 18xHD + cables on Ebay for a great price, set it up connecting to the LAN port on the PC making sure to follow the OpenCPN Install Guide, and it all works great - no seperate heading info was required.

Re: question about radar integration

bluecolumbia..
As said above. Any heading received into OCPN is what you need to show chart overlay. Nothing special so what you've will be good.
For supported radar types see the manual here.
I've a old Navico 3G and it's good for me. Dependence of your needs and wallet a Halo may be very fine.
(Navico is the maker. Sold with labels from Simrad/Lowrance/B&G. All the same.)

See https://github.com/opencpn-radar-pi/...recommendation for advice on which radar to get.
