Question Problem with USB-Key Dongle and oeSENC charts with O5.2.0 on Linux

Hello,

We use a USB-Key Dongle to get oeSENC charts in OpenCPN on our main navigation system (Linux-Navigatrix), as well as on our on-board back-up system (Windows-XP) and an other test system at home (Windows-XP and Linux-Navigatrix).
All systems are updated to the most recent versions of OpenCPN and its plugins oeSENC (and sgLock).

Unfortunately we don't get the oeSENC charts presented when on Linux, while all goes well on Windows.

According to the log files, it seems to be a problem of USB-Key Dongle recognition. Maybe because of different versions of the plugin oeSENC (= 4.2 in Windows and 4.0 in Linux-repository).
See attached document with relevant parts of the log files.

Please, can someone instruct me what to do to get oeSENC charts visible in our main system on Linux?

Kind regards, Klaas

KlassFreya....

On the faulting linux system, to simplify the debug, please show the output from:

$/usr/bin/oeserverd -a

$ldd /usr/bin/oeserverd

Thanks
Dave

Re: Problem with USB-Key Dongle and oeSENC charts with O5.2.0 on Linux

Don't expect Navigatrix to work with the latest versions of the plug-ins.
The distro has not be updated since several years now, if our info is correct.

If you want something out of the box, you might consider OpenPLotter on some lightweight version of Ubuntu for example.

Regarding XP a big number of installs do work, some not. The reason is most often some rotten component of the OS.

Re: Problem with USB-Key Dongle and oeSENC charts with O5.2.0 on Linux

Thank you BCN for your quick reply.

About Navigatrix, just a couple of weeks ago they released a new version 1.0.

This new version gave me the same problems with OpenCPN in combination with oeSENC charts.

All other stuff of the new Navigatrix-1.0 program-set works fine on our different systems, just like the older version 0.5. As be it a bit (too) heavy for our Asus EeePC. That's the reason I'ld like to use the older system 0.5 as the lightweight solution.

Regarding the updates for OpenCPN and its plugins, we have to use the Ubuntu repository. And in that repository is for our use no newer version of oesenc-pi than 4.0.10-0~trusty1.

About Windows-XP, we use a special tailor-made lightweight version of the final set with all official security-updates. It has proven to be stable and robust for the last years. Only one thing; we have to stay away from internet.

Kind regards, Klaas.

Re: Problem with USB-Key Dongle and oeSENC charts with O5.2.0 on Linux

Hello Dave,
It's time for an update now and with good news; problem solved.

I also installed OpenCPN-5.2 on our standard home computer (uptodate Linux-Xubuntu) and experienced that when using the USB-Key Dongle our oeSENC chartset was presented well.
That gave me something to compare with.

The associating OpenCPN-logfiles and your Terminal commands pointed me in the end to the file 'libstdc++.so.6.0.21', being a shared library in the map '/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/'.
This file in the faulty systems (Navigatrix, both old and new version) was from december 2015. This file in the good working home computer (Xubuntu) was from october 2019 and had a 50% bigger size.

After copying the newer version of the shared library from the home computer into the faulty systems, these systems also recognised the USB-Key dongle and presented the oeSENC charts in good order.

According to Synaptic, it seems that the uptodate Xubuntu on my home computer is based on Ubuntu-Xenial, while Navigatrix (the old version 0.5 as well as the very recent version 1.0) is based on the older Ubuntu-Trusty.

Assuming that I'm not the only person who relies on Ubuntu-Trusty repositories, I'ld suggest to arrange an update of the shared library file 'libstdc++.so.6.0.21' somewhere also meant for somewhat older Ubuntu versions.

I'm not familiar with the backstage processes of updating all the different linux species and programs, so I don't know if my suggestion to you is well-placed. I hope you can arrange something or know where to inform someone to get it done.
And if I'm wrong, sorry for my lack of knowledge.

I'll also inform the distributors of Navigatrix about this issue; maybe that's an even better place.

Kind regards,
and thanks a lot for giving direction,
Klaas

Re: Problem with USB-Key Dongle and oeSENC charts with O5.2.0 on Linux

Hello Dave,

As a supplement to my message from yesterday, I can report about my contact with the distributors of Navigatrix.

They will arrange an update in their software soon. So for all users of Navigatrix this problem will be solved.

Other people, also dependent on the Ubuntu-Trusty repository will still face the same problem.
I hope you can mean something for them within OpenCPN.

Kind regards,
Klaas
