Problem with OpenCPN

Today, I thought I best check the computer connections and my charting program before launching again soon. When I opened OpenCPN, it immediately crashed. Hmmm. Try again, same result. I downloaded the new version, just in case my files had been corrupted. Same result - it crashed. I tried both with and without GPS and AIS cables connected.

Any suggestions? What am I doing wrong?

Check this link Installing OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage for help.
Come back again if you still have trouble after working through the points.

Re: Problem with OpenCPN

Thank you for your response, Thomas. I worked through the suggestions, re-named the .ini file and re-started OpenCPN. And it crashed.

In the log files, I noted the same error messages. This is the message:

Error: Failed to convert file "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\opencpn\opencpn.ini" to Unicode.
11:42:56: Warning: can't open user configuration file 'C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\opencpn\opencpn.ini'.
11:42:56: Setting Viewpoint Lat/Lon 33.358, -79.282

File C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\opencpn\navobj.xml seems not to be well-formed UTF-8 XML, used fallback ASCII format conversion - some text information might have not been imported.

I don't think that his is an OpenCPN problem. It seems more like an operating system problem.
Which operating system? Is it fully updated?
It would help to see a full session of the log file.

OpenCP comes with these wxWidgets dll:s
Code:
wxbase28u_net_vc_custom.dll
wxmsw28u_adv_vc_custom.dll
 wxmsw28u_gl_vc_custom.dll
wxbase28u_vc_custom.dll
wxmsw28u_aui_vc_custom.dll
wxmsw28u_html_vc_custom.dll
wxbase28u_xml_vc_custom.dll
wxmsw28u_core_vc_custom.dll
They are all unicode versions, notice the "28u" in all the files.
Make sure that you don't have any ANSI versions of these wxwidgets dlls on your computer. That may confuse O.

The OS is XP service pack 3 and up to date. I checked the wxWidgets and they are all 28u.

Any other ideas? I can use another charting program if I have to but prefer to use OpenCPN.

Thanks

It's essential that OpenCPN is closed down when renaming the opencpn.ini file. Try it again, and then describe exactly when the program crashes. Please publish the log covering this (your last) session.

Try moving all navobj.xml files away and starting again.
If it now works, see if you can get any of the backup navobj.xml.X files to work when named as navobj.xml

I moved all of the navobj.xml files to the desktop. Then re-started the program and it booted! Yeah! But now, I am not sure what you mean by "the backup navobj.xml files". Do you mean the ones that I moved out of the file or are there backup ones somewhere else? Sorry for the dumb question but I just don't want to mess up the program now that it is working again.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Problem with OpenCPN

OK, so your navobj.xml is corrupt. You then have a number of files called navobj.xml.1, .2 , .3 etc.

These are the backups.

You can try renaming navobj.xml.1 to navobj.xml and see if it works. And so on.
