Re: Pricken and oeSenc charts

((the tide calculation app, but have not subscribed to it, since the accuracy for german waters is not perfect. It's not their fault, it is rather an issue with the german authorities (BSH) not making public the current harmonics data needed for calculating tides. ))
Manfred

Manfred, the tide calculation for Germany are based on a different system such that they use time differnces with the meridian passage of the moon on the Greenwich (000 degrees) meridian and the 180 degrees meridian. They use 43 constituents different from the harmonics and the system is not easy for a non initiate. This was laid out long time ago when they realised that it was the only way to predict the low water time more accurately that the harmonic way. The BSH are good people and ready to help when someone konws what to do, but it is not for the common being.
Best Regards.

No trolls here in Germany. Trolls live in Sweden. But, no withies in Sweden, They draw their navigational marks on rocks. Which makes live much easier, since rocks don't move (this is a quote from a swede showing me his grandpa's paper chart from the 30s last century, he used for navigation). Withies don't move either, but they disappear over winter and reappear in spring, often at slightly different locations. Can be as annoying as trolls, but less funny.

Seriously: here are the relevant screen shots after setting language to english to make things easier for the international audience here.

The first one from a southern withy, which is a port hand lateral mark.

Re: Pricken and oeSenc charts

Manfred...

digging a bit further into the details:
(The chart with the examples is 49-RMAON5 (DE5NOAMR), Amrum Island)

Finally these are beacons, object type BCNLAT, Q90, with attribute types
BCNSHP 1
CATLAM 1 or 2 (port/stbd)

Which are portrayed correctly by OCPN, as BCNSHP=1 does not show differences for CATLAM.

However, if you look at the other objects there, we find TOPMAR (Topmarks), with TOPSHP (Topshape) 15 or 16, which we don't portrait or don't know how to portrait yet. Hence the "?".

I understand that a BCNLAT shall not have a topmark, but it seems that the cartographers have chosen here the combination of two object types instead of portraying one object BCNLAT with BCNSHP "2".

We will discuss to add that type of topmarks that seem not to be implemented right now. Because asking the German BSH for clarification would not help that much at this moment, I fear. We agree fully with your assertion, that this is a safety issue.

Re: Pricken and oeSenc charts

I have to restart an old threat again, since the issue is not solved completely or has stopped functioning properly.

Now, the whitties of interest have a topmark, but it is the wrong one.

Please compare the screen shot from the BSH (the german hydrographic organization) and the screen shot from OpenCPN:

Please be aware, we are in IALA A. Green pointy buoys are to starboard and red flat bouys are to port. The harbour is to the west (left on the screen shot)

The same area with OpenCPN and o-charts.

Zoomed in and showing the information of one of the southerly whittiess (the lower) which is wrong, however consistent with what is drawn: point up.

Since, we are again dealing with the idiosyncrasies of the german and dutch waddensea we may as well discuss the type of symbols: more clear than what OCPN is showing are the symbols 91 of chart no 1, instead of 92 which are considered obsolete anyhow.
