Re: Plugin Polar

Peter

Rings: 6.9.12.18.24
Degrees: 8, 10, 15 - I would like to see 5 added.

Also when one "Loads" a polar does the "Source" GPS or "Speedo" matter?
Should it be greyed or something?

Rick,

I will add the 5 degrees in the next update.
When you load the polar file it does not use the source GPS or Speedo
as this is just a file with the data that is loaded.
At this moment after you load the polar file, you can start the "Data from xxxx" and this will add new data points to the polar (using GPS or Speedo) after which you can save the polar again.
As all commands like Data from xxx and Load are on the same level I don't think that I can grey out the Source button.

Re: Plugin Polar

Now that Polar_pi works with .POL and .CSV from Weather_routing_pi I have included a new Polar Files folder with sample files to test out.

OpenCPN Beta File Thingie rguser rgpass
Look in the Polar Files directory.

The first example below is "Loaded" using Boat_Alexandra.pol (or .CSV)

The second example below is using "Data from File" and selecting the Harmut nmea data file. The plugin is in the process of running the recorded nmea file and showing it on the polar diagram. The output can be filtered and averaged using the "Filters".

We need user's experience and suggestions for improvements. This tool can take nmea data from calabrated instruments and create Polar files for the boat. It is wise to pick consistant conditions such as sea state, sail inventory, and have a clean bottom (or one that is similar state).

The polar created can then be used with Weather_Routing to create optimal cruising routes.

Re: Plugin Polar

Peter {Ptulp} I would like to thank you for your improvements to the Polar_pi plugin, they will be very helpful.

I hope someone will test making a Polar diagram from the Logbook database, as I have not been able to do that yet. (We need to be able to import a Metero and Navigation database into Logbook Konni) Also is there a way to "Save" this data from Logbook Konni, so that I could "Import" it?

Re: Plugin Polar

1. I was able to run Harmut-Netherlands-Merkmeer.txt nmea file with VDR Player and see the data scrolling in the OpenCPN Nmea debug window.

2. With some suggestions I was able to then bring up Logbook Konni Logbook and get the plugin to record about 350 1-minute intervals of the streaming nmea data in the Navigation Log and the Meteo Log (showing Wind direction and speed, etc).

3. Then with Logbook Konni still up I was able to start the Polar_pi plugin and select "Data from Logbook". The polar was quickly drawn reading through the 350 approx data points.

4. It could be improved by being more careful about when the motor is on and when the boat conditions are constant, however it does show that the recording does work.

Re: Plugin Polar

OpenCPN Beta File Thingie rguser rgpass
Look under Logbook Files

EdelVoilier_Logbook_archive.zip (txt)
logbook-hartmut-netherlands-merkermeer.zip (excel.csv)

NOTE: I was not able to save the Logbook files as HTML or TXT it would not work!!!
Only .csv would work.

Rick,

Did you download from my (ptulp) github version of LogbookKonni-1.2?
Normally Del would take care of the versionnumber, which is now not updated I think. Still version 1.2015
Also the po files are not completely translated at the moment, so translations will be off I guess.

Re: Plugin Polar

Peter, please see this thread about recommended Polar ingestion and format.
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ml#post1768733

Is Polar_pi supporting display in 5, 10 or 15 degree steps?
Can you tell us why you removed 8, 24 and 20 degrees? - was it because most of the polars were in 5 degrees?

Also can you explain what your import polar does to make the various polars work? Thanks.

Hopefully we can get weather_routing, polar_pi and tackandlay working in concert with respect to polars, and have them able to ingest the 4 basic header and delimiter types. Then we need to have some ways of dealing with the various degrees....and it might be best if we had a common policy on that.

You input would be most welcome.

At this moment the polar plugin takes info from eg NMEA and collects it in 5 degrees winddirections and 2 knots of windspeed and saves this.
It will middle the steps, eg 6 and 7 degree will be added to the 5 degree step and 8 and 9 will be added to 10 degree step.
The windspeed is divided by 2, so column 2 knots hold the speeds from 2 till 3.99 and column 4 knots will hold the speeds 4 till 5.99. etc upto 40 knots.

If reading in other polars it tries to fill in the winddirection in 5 degree steps
and 2 knots of wind like the input from NMEA.
It will use the same sampling as above.

If all this is different than expected in a polar, please let me know and I will change it.

I have just uploaded the latest version of the polar plugin.
Could somebody build it for windows please.

The OSX build can be found here

or here:
https://github.com/ptulp/polar_pi/releases
Version is 1.1003 now.

Thanks,
