Please Spoon Feed OpenCPN for me...

OK i kind of remind myself of looking at my dad when he was trying to program the BetaMax video hundreds of years ago and thinking to myself 'why can't he get it' well now i know and Raspberry Pi is my BetaMax.

i think one of my problems is that there is too much new stuff all at once. too many new names and acronyms to get my head around.

i have my brand new Raspberry Pi 3 up and running it, it is now sitting next to my Router and i am SSH'ing in and trying to run KingTides tutorial. i did try downloading the software directly from OpenCPN.org and i have an unzipped directory in my base directory...

"pi@raspberrypi:~ $ dir
age_tutorial_program.py Documents Music Pictures python_games Templates
Desktop Downloads OpenCPN Public Scratch Videos"

but i have no idea what to do with it and when i run KingTide's commands i get this (last couple of lines)
"After this operation, 23.6 MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] Y
Abort."

why 'Abort'...?

i just need a clue or a point in the right direction.

Re: Please Spoon Feed OpenCPN for me...

You can get a complete system for the RasPI from the Openplotter project:
Sailing with free hardware | Sailoog

Much easier way to run OCPN on your system. And includes a lot of the goodies.

That option is frequently unavailable, but it does exist on this helpful forum. Sorry I can't help. Hoever I will be watching!

Yup
Not sure what's included in the noobs, I went for the one next to it, v0. 8.
Just burn it on a card, I use win32 disk imager to burn from a win machine onto a card. 10x speed 8GB sd card works well.
Then stick it in your pi and off you go
Opencpn plus loads of plugins and MUCH more, the openplotter nsoftware makes it dead easy to set up gps/ais etc plus easy to add cheap thermometers, a barometer, loads of stuff.
Go for it
(you got cm93 charts?)

Re: Please Spoon Feed OpenCPN for me...

OK guys after several hours hard screen staring it is loading i had to use a PC to down load from the MEGA thing then the Apple to format and write to the card, it 90% extracted on the RPi now (i'm not superstitious). the instructions on the download files i.e. the 'read me' were among the most helpful i had found. if anyone else is contemplating this i would recommend it, the only outlay to get started is the $35 board. if its no use you you then give it to the kids.

and now its open, done.

now to get a small screen and put it all in a biscuit tin.

Thanks guys.

A pity that version 0.9 is still not available. But it can be installed via Github.
Now the SignalK instruments are working in any browser. Works allready pretty well here with nice features.

Re: Please Spoon Feed OpenCPN for me...

Video is put on the wrong page.

Video is showing SignalK instruments working. SignalK is a very promising development.

Not only for navigation but also for other functions like Engine temperature, RPM etc. etc.

Working here in the Chromium Browser on a Raspberry Pi 2 with the OpenPlotter 0.9.0 SignalK server.

Have you tried node-RED yet to create custom gauges etc? It's already installed on the latest raspian.
Just type node-red in a terminal and it gives you a web address, programming and viewing is done via a web page. Seems very powerful, I just started having a look at it last night reading DS18B20 engine thermometer data send from openplotter using mqtt.

Re: Please Spoon Feed OpenCPN for me...

looks like some of you intelligent people have hijacked my stoooopid thread... but since your here....

i'm trying to get cm93 onto the ocpn sd card but the file structure when viewed in mac finder is completely different from the ssh screen. i'm sure this is another one of those palm face moments...

many thanks for the patience.

Regards Steven
