many thanks for the patience.

Sorry, thought you'd got sorted out. So are you trying to move files over ssh? On Linux and Windows I use filezilla then if the Pi and laptop are on the same wifi network you can log on though filezilla using the ip address given in the access point tab in openplotter and copy the files that way. Or if you log onto to the openplotter wifi access point try 10.10.10.1.

Downloading the files with the Pi browser from the internet ?

Using a USB stick with a compatibel file system ? To do it on a simple way.

No, I use filezilla to transfer files to/from the Pi and laptop over wifi , even easier than a USB stick, just click and drag

But Steven-UK has written something like that:

OK guys after several hours hard screen staring it is loading i had to use a PC to down load from the MEGA thing then the Apple to format and write to the card, it 90% extracted on the RPi now (i'm not superstitious).
Formating a card with Apple may result in a filesystem (Mac OS Extended) which another OS is not able to read. The card should formated with FAT32 filesystem.

Which is why filezilla was suggested - no need to swap cards at all.
Anyway, when the image gets written to the card it will overwrite any partitions.

when i formatted the card i did as per the instructions on OCPN website i.e. downloaded the official SD card formatting tool, then copied the SD image from the sailingoog onto it, and it worked. i was then given a copy of cm93 by a very generous member of this community. so i have the RPi 3 up and running reliably with OCPN and i have a way to view the card with a laptop. the cm93 was downloaded onto the laptop. problem is when i look at the file system with the raspberry terminal window it looks nothing like the file system when i put the SD card into the laptop. so i cant just drag and drop the file into a suitable looking folder, or any folder because i wont be able to find it when i put the card back into the raspberry.

i'm sure its just another one of the small details that i am overlooking, i will also say i'm not super familiar with iOS either.

i've looked at setting up the raspberry to read thumb drives and this may be the way to go. but it feels like i am missing something basic.

thanks for the generous responses so far.

Re: Please Spoon Feed OpenCPN for me...

On linux (& windows? can't remember) the SD crad filesystem comes up as 2 devices.
1 is boot

And the other is the Pi filesystem - if you go into Home/Pi it should look more familiar..
Is this what you see as well?

Re: Please Spoon Feed OpenCPN for me...

no (i will try and get a screen shot when i get home from work) the Raspberry shell screen shows about eight directories that make perfect sense charts e.t.c. but on the apple laptop in finder i get boot and another one, both full of something i cant recognize and after searching every avenue i still find nothing that resembles the Raspberry shell directory layout. i'll get some screen shots later.

On the apple, in the device that isn't called boot - is there a directory called home? In side that there should be another on call Pi, then in there should be more familiar.

Re: Please Spoon Feed OpenCPN for me...

Steven,

can you post a screenshot of the finder window?

And what Conachair said: a remote file transfer with the both systems - your Apple and the RasPi is another way to do the job.
Under Windows WinSCP for example - not your case, I know..

so from the finder screen Boot and Recovery is what is on the SD card.

then Chart Document Gribs e.t.c. from the SSH window.

i'm not sure why the local copy of OpenCPN shows up as a 'disc'.

You might have somewhere a file called OpenCPN_4.4.0.dmg.
For Apple this is a "virtual disc" and when opened it is seen as a disc.
