Re: Pilot Grib Files - Similar to Pilot Charts

Does anyone know how I can download old GRIB files? I am not so much interested in the prvailing winds, as in the dynamics. How far do fronts move and how fast and far do they travel. This is for going from the Bahamas to USVI in December.

Re: Pilot Grib Files - Similar to Pilot Charts

Grib files are only a prediction. I think you need historic data. This was used to build the averages for climatology plugin. I think a future version could do what you describe, but a detailed discussion of how it could be implemented would help.

Re: Pilot Grib Files - Similar to Pilot Charts

Thanks. I understand the prediction issues.

Still, for short time frames GRIBS should be pretty precise nowadays. So I figure if I pick a date and get a sequence of historic - day forecasts and chain the data together I should be pretty close.

Any idea when you may have that info, or where I can get my hand on the weather data for Bahamas and east to USVI for November 2013?

Would be great if one could just send an email request like for GRIB forecasts, and put a date into it to get the old data.

Climatology Plugin For OpenCPN

Intended to aid in planning sailing voyages, to help visualize weather patterns, and to integrate with the weather routing plugin to compute optimal sailing routes.
Satellite weather data from the last 30 years is averaged, then represented using only useful bits, then compressed to produce a much smaller database used by the plugin.

Re: Pilot Grib Files - Similar to Pilot Charts

Hi there. I'm interested in this conversation. Like Gleason, I would like to get a grib file of the winds as depicted in the COGOW project, or based on Pilot Charts, which I can load into a router.

In summary, for a given month (or fortnight if it existed) and a given large area (eg North Atlantic) I would like to get the grib file which depicts the most likely wind pattern based on historical data. I need the standard grib format which can be loaded straight into Expedition or QtVlm.

Thanks if someone can help me here.

John

Re: Pilot Grib Files - Similar to Pilot Charts

John this is an old thread and a conceptual one that has been implemented in the plugin called Climatology. Please read the documentation on climatology plugin which Sean implimented and I helped with data collection, processung and testing. If there is something you think is missing in climatology please let us know. We are very lucky to have this plugin by Sean!
