Opening Open CPN Dat files

Hi,
I am comparatively backward when it comes to computing. A colleague has put me in to Open CPN as a free programme for passage planning whilst at home.
I have tried to open the large background maps with little success. Diagnostic programme can tell me the different programmes that might open it and have tried internet explorer, note pad, word to no avail. Can you help.

To what exactly do you refer by "the large background maps"?
Did you read the manual, especially Installing Charts | Official OpenCPN Homepage ?
