OpenGL replacement

It is time to think of a replacement for the OpenGL graphic library for OpenCPN.
Not only Microsoft but other companies as well will abandon OpenGL in the future. It seems OpenGL will be replaced by Vulkan the next generation OpenGL. For most operation systems MoltenVK is available which emulates Vulkan. It is time to think of a OpenGL replacement for OpenCPN and how to do such a switch.

Re: OpenGL replacement

CarCode...
It is good to think ahead on this. Yes, Vulkan is probably going to replace GL in the future, with improved performance and compatibility.
Yet, we do not need to jump immediately. OpenGL will no doubt be supported in a legacy fashion for many years to come. The installed code-base of OpenGL applications in the field is enormous. They will not be made to stop working overnight. Imagine the row when all the OpenGL games just "stop".

Thanks
Dave

Re: OpenGL replacement

bdbcat...
It is correct what you wrote. I only want to point to that in time because it will be a huge task to switch all the code and the plugin developers should know what may happen in the future. Best to be forward-looking rather then to have been surprised.
Microsoft has never supported open source code in the past very much and Apple seems to change many things in the future not only their switch from Intel to Arm.

Re: OpenGL replacement

It seems like opengl can run on top of vulkan, so this is really not very urgent, and opencpn doesn't stand to benefit from switching at this point.

opencpn works fine without microsoft or apple; not sure I really care what they do.

Re: OpenGL replacement

Good evening,
I have installed Opencpn on a Raspberry Pi4.

After installing the nautical charts I get the hint that I should/must install OPENGL to display the charts.
I just don't know how to do that.
Hopefully one of the forists here can help me.

Probably a piece of cake for experienced people, but I can't get any further.
I am grateful for any help.

Greetings
Karl

Re: OpenGL replacement

Open the Options or Settings wheel on the menu. Go to Display/Advance and at the bottom check the Use Accelerated Graphics box.
