OpenCPN XP Installation Problems

Folks...

We have had sporadic reports of OpenCPN for Windows failing to run properly after a seemingly clean installation on a virgin XP system.. Doesn't happen always, and in fact is fairly rare, we think.

In each case we find that the VC2008 redistributable package failed to automatically install correctly as part of the OpenCPN installation process, and a manual installation of the VC redistributable was necessary. Following the manual VC install, OpenCPN runs correctly.

This problem may (?) have been reported on Win7 as well, although our records are not clear.

The issue: Not one of the OpenCPN developers can reproduce this error, so we are having a hard time with the diagnosis. Further, users who have had this problem in the past will never again have it after having manually installed the VC redistributable.

So, we request the following:
a. If you had this problem at one time or another, then
b. Please let us know about it here, and help us to isolate and solve this bug.

If possible, we will ask you to un-install OpenCPN, and the redistributable, and run the OpenCPN installer again from scratch to regenerate the error. We will then examine carefully any logs generated by the installer and try to get to the bottom of this one.

No "luck" in recreating this bug on two very different boxes.
In the meantime here is an ini file, created when updating from 2.3.1 to 2.4.324 on an XP, that creates a crash when trying to pan a chart.

I tried too.I'm still XP SP1 (because I prefer it,barring the wireless update)

Uninstalled O',cleaned as well as i know,uninstalled the vcredist_x86 too-I actually had 3 versions of VCredist aboard,all showing in the Add or remove programs dialogue!-sloppy,eh?

but Fresh Install works fine.I will try the same on the ol'boat laptop today-it DID exhibit the "problem" with 2.3(like many?) until I put my own VCredist on...If I can make it cry with 3.4,I'll bring 'er back and we can torture it....

I have recently joined this group as I have been running Seaclear for about 3 yrs on a military grade laptop. Open CPN looks like a great upgrade. I have been trying to setup a HP TC1100 netbook as a cockpit stand alone with ultimate objective of adding engine instrumentation, AIS and as autopilot. I have experienced many, many, many problems with XP that arise from its inherent unreliability. (com port migration, standby does not wakeup, conflict with USB GPS and other USB drivers etc etc). If anyone is going to setup a new system I would recommend dumping any microsoft operating system for a suitable Linux or other platform as the problems I have experienced seem well dodcumented by MS and they have done nothing to resolve them. There is a full page print out of PC models that are affected by the no wakeup problem alone and these type problems are acccentuated by usage as a nav system.

So I am not sure this is the problem that this thread is about but here is my experience. I have just installed Windows XP MPE and activated it, my next move was to install opencpn all seemed to be happy until I pressed finish with the start opencpn box ticked. nothing nada! No problem just start it from the desktop shortcut, no luck. Just get the following message "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect.Reinstalling the application may fix this problem" I have tried reinstalling 3 times and rebooted the computer several times to no avail, I wonder if this is the situation that you are working on.

Ross,it sounds like you have the gremlin by the tail.
If possible,hang on to it until the Doctors can get to you.Don't rub it or scratch it or even wash it.

There is a fix,but as you know,the Geniuoids want to know where the error comes from...

if you could creep up on it and make a copy of this file (IF it even exists!)

"C:\Program Files\OpenCPN\install.log"

and even,post it here,anytime it's convenient for you...?you know,a copy and paste into a post would work ok.

...and maybe even capture this folder (again,if it exists)as a copy-the whole thing-it's not so big-and store it somewheres.I don't know if it's useful to the case but hey,it might be:

"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\opencpn"

If none of this exists (being an incomplete install ,eh?)or it's not what you want to do,please stand by for the Doctor,whatever,if you can.They might be out at a wild Friday night seminar or whatever Engineers do on a night off.

Standby awhile and see if this is what the Developers need.

I had bad installs with the Stable Version 2.3.1 exactly like this-it's very fixable as is.
while the newest beta version 2.4.412

worked fine for me...but let's wait awhile before we put that on!

The cause of some of these problems are due to the Anti virrus used.
If you are using Kaspersky it did it to me.

Welcome aboard, and thanks for coming up to the plate here.

The first log is informative. We need to look at another log:

C:\temp\vcredist_x86.log

This file may have been deleted, as it is a temp file. If you cannot find it, please try to re-install opencpn, and look again.

If still not found, use the XP Find File... tool to look for vcredist_86.log

If you find the log, please post here. If you do not find it, we will try something else.
