opencpn won't read gps

opencpn doesn't recognize my BU353S4 gps puck. Have spent two days now reading, installing/uninstalling programs, etc etc and can't get opencpn ver.5 to recognize the gps. Everything works fine on my tablet but not on my windows 10 pc. It does appear that the puck is working though. Please help.

Re: opencpn won't read gps

Hi Bill,
I am only on version 4.8.8 but also share a puck between a Win10 laptop and tablet.
My puck is a VFAN UG353 and it came with Ublox software.
Normally I just have to check that the Ublox is not running at the same time and that the COMM port agrees between Windows and Ublox and OpenCPN. The baud rate is 9600. The GPS seems to 'sleep' while the Options tab is open, I have to close the Options window before the coordinates update.

Have you tried a swap while both computers are running? Other than COMM port number, the settings from the tablet should be the same for the PC. The filtering setting does not seem to make a difference for me.

I am not a 'rocket scientist' with any of this stuff, it took me a while to get my Garmin GPS/fish finder to talk to OpenCPN. It's a nice feeling when it comes together.

Spot
you have nailed the problem: OpenCPN 4.8.8 works but version 5.0 not.
Hopefully they remove now the buggy serial code in version 5.0.

I'm using a GPS hockey puck dongle with OpenCPN version 5 with a Raspberry Pi 4 using the Raspbian OS.

I have it here. I'll try downloading OpenCPN 5 onto this laptop again and see if I can connect to the GPS Dongle. The problem might be Windows 10.

At work when the software techs are upgrading up from Windows 7 to Windows 10 tons of problems crop up.

Re: opencpn won't read gps

Okay. I just downloaded OpenCPN 5.0 with a couple RNC charts onto this laptop which is running Windows 10.

I finally got the GPS Dongle to work, but I had to assign a priority of zero when I did the port connection on OpenCPN.

Then my position popped up on the chart. I live about a mile off the Bay so it's displayed. I also got the satellite bars showing connection

After I got the initial connection, it seems to now work on priority 0 or 1 but I didn't reboot my computer to verify

Re: opencpn won't read gps

Tried the priority 0 setting to no avail. I'm too computer illiterate to try adding a whole bunch of other software to try to get this puck to work. I am prepared to buy another gps but I guess I am looking for some assurance that a new one will basically plug and play with opencpn. There seems to be a concensus out there that the problem lies with version 5 or/and Windows 10. Thanks to all so far.

Re: opencpn won't read gps

Since a long, long time it is well known that Microsoft always has problems with drivers of any kind. Even with latest Window version you are not sure if an actually working driver will be destroyed by the next Microsoft update.
To avoid that you can use a Bluetooth GPS device if your computer has builtin Bluetooth. So you never care about drivers anymore and are able to use the Bluetooth GPS device with any OS.

Re: opencpn won't read gps

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I got opencpn to finally see the gps. I went back to the gps setup and set the baud rate at 4800 and then to opencpn and changed it to priority zero and 4800 baud and BINGO! A huge thanks again to all for the help.

It gets pretty tiresome to see so many titles that state:

Opencpn doesn't do this or that..."

Perhaps there is another less imposing way to get attention?
We know the subject is OpenCPN, so no need to use that. EG:

Nice.

Maybe I should have mentioned that my gps dongle was a 4800 baud whereas the nmea data coming in from my SH GX2200 VHF is like 38400

it's still worth the effort though when you make it work yourself. You will never forget it......well as we age won't forget for a while!

Same here, the Garmin is a different baud rate than GPS puck.

Re: opencpn won't read gps

I agree. Opencpn is great and there are many out there that make it so. Thank you all.
