Dirk..
If your table is out of date and no update is available from Furuno you could let it send a manual variation and that would be possible to set to 0.0? At least what I could find in the manual. Since I've no Furuno GPS at home I can't test now. But you could have a check?
I may be the same for most such gadgets. I use it on my rather dated Garmin 120.

From the Furuno GPS32-37 operators manual:

Code:
1. Press the [MENU] key once or twice to
open the menu.
2. Choose PLOTTER and then press the
[ENT] key.
3. Choose MAG. VAR.
4. Press the [ENT] key.
5. Choose AUTO or MAN as appropriate
and then press the [ENT] key. For
automatic magnetic variation, current
magnetic variation appears to the right of
AUTO.
6. If you selected AUTO, no further
operation is necessary; go to step 7. For
MAN, press the [ENT] key and enter
magnetic variation as follows:
a) If necessary, change coordinate from
east to west or vice versa by pressing
▲ or ▼.
b) Press ► to shift cursor, use ▲ or ▼ to
set value, referring to a nautical chart.
c) Press the [ENT] key.
7. Press the [MENU] key twice to finish

Thanks for that, I didn't know they hide it in the plotter menu (I had checked the others menus). And yes, I can set it manually to zero, and then it shows as "0" in the RMC sentence.

That doesn't make it right though. It is a workaround for O not being able to override that value via the WMM plugin.... I understand, this is nothing new, but beta testing can bring up old issues too :-)

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Beta Release 4.99.1507

Yes it's a workaround for those of us not want to buy new equipment just for the reason the makers don't want to support updated firmware, including an up to date wmm table.
The O logic to switch to WMM_pi if the variation is 0.0 is new for this beta version.
Another way would of course be to have an option for that in O. It's a matter of how much options we must have? ...

The options are already there.
- We have the option to enter variation manually.
- We have the option of turning off WMM
it is just a question of priority. If we do not have a manual variation and have WMM off then use the variation from the GPS instead of the other way around.

And this will work perfectly until someone who prefers the variation from his GPS over the one provided by WMM plugin for some reason appears

What is more useful/intuitive to a user? A check-mark to use WMM variation vs some 'hidden' functionality setting the variation output to 0 on the GPS device? The later can probably be found in the manual somewhere...

So give the user a clear choice... maybe instead of displaying nanoteslas :-)

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Beta Release 4.99.1507

Is it normal that te latest version from https://ci.appveyor.com/project/bdbc...uild/artifacts deletes the tcdata map and contents and displays this error?

Had this on 2 machines Windows 10

No. And as far as I can tell it does not do it on my system.

I certainly will, as soon as I find the respective feature request in the tracker when looking for another work to do in my free time...

No. In that case just disable WMM and do not enter manual variation.

The only sane way is of course to make this clearly configurable by the user, replacing one implementation people don't understand with another is IMHO not going to do the job...

Done:
https://opencpn.org/flyspray/index.p...s&task_id=2537

I entered this a bug, not a feature request, since the current behavior is so non-intuitive: set GPS unit variation to zero, then WMM variation is used in OpenCPN

There is of course nothing that can stop you from increasing clutter in the tracker. It will not make anybody pick it any sooner I'm afraid though...

Or buy you a new GPS that won't send data jeopardizing OCPN and other. **** in = **** out, if you don't take care of your equipment around O.
