Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.2 Released

Hakan,
Thank you for your suggestions. I have successfully connected Vesper AIS and installed new Radar plug in. All working now!

However, during uninstall and reinstall, i have lost all my former Routes, Tracks and WPs. There are none showing in Route & Mark Manager.

How can I restore them?

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.2 Released

Plover..
Ouch.. No idea why they have disappeared but all routes and.. are saved in "navobj.xml" in the same folder where the log-file resist. (On my W10: C:\ProgramData\opencpn)
On every O start up a copy is saved as navobj.xml.1 and further to navobj.xml.5

The only advice I can give is to make a copy of navobj.xml and navobj.xml.5. Then delete navobj.xml and rename navobj.xml.5 to navobj.xml before next start of OCPN. If you are lucky your routes and more was present in navobj.xml.5

BTW: To be safe in future save a copy of navobj.xml in for example "Documents"

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.2 Released

Thx for the suggestions to restore the Nav Data backup. My computer is set up to do 5 xml backups but there were not 5 because I hadn't restarted it that many times.

When I installed the V5.8.2, all my navobjects were lost.

I retrieved a navobj.xml file from a different computer with an older version of this file. I was able to restore old routes, tracks etc.

I also have on my computer GPX files for routes, tracks, WPs etc so I could restore that way.

I wanted to find a brand new GPX track that I created 2 weeks ago in the previous O version of 5.6. I see that I should be able to do this via Git Hub but I don't understand what to do to. I went to the GitHub hotlink and it says “This is not the web-page you are looking for”.

Any advice?

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.2 Released

Any advice on how to restore a new GPX track that I created 2 weeks go in a previous version of O 5.6. I lost all my novobjects when I upgraded to V5.8.2. Never happened before.

I'm trying to recreate all my old WPs, tracks, & routes. I especially need the new track that I just created.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.2 Released

If you didn't make any other back-up copy and the navobj.xml files do not recover that track, it is lost. OpenCPN does not make further copies than those in the navobj.xml generations.

Maybe a small chance if you look for deleted files in the directory

Where can I find the navobj xml back up files on a Raspberry pi? I've looked in hidden files but can't find them.

Thx

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.2 Released

You shall find them in the same directory as the opencpn.conf file.
The "?"/About button from the tool bar does show the path.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.2 Released

I've used the new version for a few daysails so far this year. I have it running on a Microsoft Surface Go 10" tablet on Windows 10. The program runs in portable mode, with the entire program, charts, etc. on a microSD card. I've used O for 13 years, and have it extensively interfaced with my boat instruments. I receive GPS and AIS from two separate Bluetooth transmitters, receive wind/depth from SeaTalk through Wifi and send SOG and autopilot track commands through the same Wifi.

On my most recent daysail I activated a route and set my autopilot into track mode, which you may recall caused an immediate bug in v5.6.2. This time it worked better at first, but after a few minutes I lost all my charts on the screen and got a warning from my autopilot that I had excessive XTE.

I restarted OpenCPN several times. The problem recurred every time, especially with a route activated. Without route activated it worked much better, but might have had the glitch momentarily one time.

Has anyone else reported a similar issue so far?

I'm not looking for a quick fix, I'd just like some suggestions of what I can do to capture a log if it happens again so I can diagnose it.

Now that I think of it, it's possible my GPS (Garmin 18x LVC puck connected to industrial Bluetooth transmitter) was giving flaky coordinates and I lost my charts and got the XTE warning because the boat was placed somewhere else on the globe. So maybe simply doing a VDR record would help diagnose this.

The Garmin 18x had some occasional reliability issues until I re-flashed its NVRAM a couple years ago, but has run very well since then. Maybe it's time to do it again.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.2 Released

To recap, I experienced crashes with 5.8.2 on a raspberry Pi 4 8GB running Raspbian. I could reproduce the issue by playing back the candump.log file and submitted the candump.log to you, which you ran successfully. After consideration, I tried to split the log file to isolate the problem, but got mixed results - it appeared that the crash might be the result of cumulative errors. I then ran the candump.log file through the Canboat utilities candump2analyzer and then analyzer and got the following errors:
richard@Richards-iMac 5-17-23 % candump2analyzer candump-2023-05-17_112311.log > first.txt
richard@Richards-iMac 5-17-23 % analyzer -q < first.txt > second.txt
ERROR 2023-06-07T16:42:05.357Z [analyzer] PGN 128275 malformed packet from 35 received; expected 65 but got 66
ERROR 2023-06-07T16:42:10.843Z [analyzer] PGN 128275 malformed packet from 35 received; expected 1 but got 2
ERROR 2023-06-07T16:42:16.226Z [analyzer] PGN 128275 malformed packet from 35 received; expected 67 but got 97
ERROR 2023-06-07T16:42:16.226Z [analyzer] PGN 128275 malformed packet from 35 received; expected 67 but got 98
So I removed all instances of PGN 128275 from the candump-2023-05-17_112311.log file and played it back through can-utils canplayer and it ran fine. I then told my Airmar DST810 to stop sending the PGN 128275 and I have not had a crash in 2 days sailing.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.2 Released

For testing purposes, I recently setup a new Raspberry Pi installation (Raspberry Pi OS (64-bit) Debian Bullseye on my Raspberry Pi 4 8GB followed by a flatpak installation of OpenCPN 8.8.2 for Raspberry Pi. I use a Waveshare RS485 CAN HAT for Raspberry Pi and could not see any NMEA sources until I ran the following command: flatpak override --user org.opencpn.OpenCPN --allow=canbus. Thank you.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.8.2 Released

I have recently upgrade to OpenCPN 5.8.2 on my Raspberry Pi 4. Since doing this, OpenCPN crashes on startup with any plugins activated. I've read through this string but haven't come across a fix (of course I could have missed something!).

The Pi is running Buster version 10. I can't seem to upload the log & conf files, so I'll try to paste them here...

Yes, with all plugins disabled OpenCPN will run. Enabling any plugin and restarting will cause it to crash.
