Re: OpenCPN Version 5.1.620 RC1 Test

I'm upgrading from ver 4.8.8 on Win10. I skipped 5.0 because I was not able to get it to run longer than 3-4 minutes without crashing, as I was full time sailing I stuck with what worked at the time.

Now upon upgrading to the 5.1 rc, most things seemed to work ok. I upgraded my most important plugins from opencpn.org and they seemed fine.

Unfortunately, when I tried to update my charts, my computer froze. I couldn't even move the cursor. I let it sit about 15 min. and it never came back. I had to power cycle my computer, as it was completely frozen.

The happens everytime I go to chart downloaded, and click on the chart catalog (All ENC if I recall) on the select catalog tab.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.1.620 RC1 Test

Will do Dave. I am also recreating my Linux installation which I use as my main navigation computer aboard. I assume the version to test there is 5.1.704. That seems to work well as far as I've looked.

Cheers

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.1.620 RC1 Test

Hi,
Any other reports of difficulties choosing Chart Obects to display in Vector Chart display?
For me they are greyed out so can't be checked or unchecked...
Running OpenCPN 5.1.704 on Standard Ubuntu 20.04.

Dave..

I haven't tested the chart downloader in this way before so I made a test and experienced a similar failure.
Win10, O 5.1.704
What I did:

-Open tab Chart Downloader
-Add catalog
-Select USA...->ENC->All ENC->All->OK
-Click Update catalog
-The download progress window appears, closes and the ENC row is shown but still with the status "Update..."
-The complete PC is hanged, see descr below

After a new PC start:
-Open tab Chart Downloader
-Add catalog
-Select USA...->ENC->All ENC->All->OK
-The USA ENC row is now already there and need no update but in this stage the PC hangs as of description below.

During PC "Hang":
- I can't switch to another app.
- The mouse pointer can be moved but no click response.
- Occasionally the mouse pointer switch to the spinning wheel. Five or ten minutes between.
- I can't power off the PC in a normal way. To restart the "hard" power off is the only way. (Press the power switch for 30 seconds)
- Without deep c++ knowledge I get the impression several threads are waiting for each other or something like that?

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.1.620 RC1 Test

Hi Dave,

just tested the latest upgrade of version 704 for the Oesenc Dongle support.

Worked well on my Rpi 4 with the RaspiOs.

However on my Mint AMD64 (Focal) the problem of not recogising the dongle is back.

It worked on the 704 version before. There was also with the upgrade a mention that the lib?-usb was no longer needed. Is that the cause of the problem ?

Lsusb shows the Sg-lock dongle.

Regards,

Bram

Please upgrade you OpenCPN, that specific problem should have been solved in 5.1.704.3 (late last night).

After installing you will see:
/etc/udev/rules.d/98-sglock-ocpn.rules
That file should fix the way the USB dongle is recognized by the system.

If the file is not created then some fix might have to be reverted.
(It works in Debian, but the package is off course meant for Ubuntu.)

The latest version this morning:

This is what Is see:
10-openplotter.rules 98-sglock-ocpn.rules 98-sglock.rules rtl-sdr.rules

98-sglock.rules shows this:
ATTRS{idVendor}=="1547", ATTRS{idProduct}=="1000", MODE="666"

98-sglock-ocpn.rules
ATTRS{idVendor}=="1547", ATTRS{idProduct}=="1000", MODE="666"

latest version is: 5.1.704.3-0~focall

I've done many more tests. Ultimately this is what I found:

I deleted the All ENC catalog from opencpn.ini.
I also deleted All of my US charts from my chart dir.
When I added back All ENC, I had the same failure. However, I could add back all the USCG areas without problems, and download my charts that way.

I can only assume it is related to the size of the All ENC catalog.

This is some kind of Windows bug. It is actually the Windows Desktop Manager that is hanging. And not all Windows systems have the bug. I have a computer that does not hang. I have another one that does. It’s not really hung though. If you wait long enough it will recover. But no one wants to wait that long.

The simplest workaround is to use the various US Coast Guard region catalogs and avoid using the All charts catalogs. Then you won’t have this problem. There is no penalty for using this solution because you can still update all charts with a single click. And the charts are identical.

They are grayed out because you are not using Display Category -> User Standard.

Hi Dave,

it works on my AMD64 Focall. But the Oesenc dongle is again not to available in 5.1.703.3-0. Although is shows up in the lsusb.

The same version on my RaspiOs works without problems.

The former version of the 5.1.704 worked well in combination with the Oesenc dongle.

Something is changed. I have looked at the udev files. But these files looks the same as on my RPI.

Regards,

Bram
