Tough to have it both ways, but there is some logic.
MBTiles are still and always "Overlays", and not "Navigational Charts". So disabling overlays on initial load seems not a very big burden to users...
Dave

Dave,

I gave up trying for y'all to see the reason KAP and Mbtiles charts should be treated the same. IMHO both are Navigational Charts and help keep boats off the bottom. So this isn't about 'both ways'.

For the user that has turned off chart outlines there is no indication that some useful charts exist in the area of concern.

First two images from beta and last one from current version. At least now with chart outlines turned off the presence of a chart is known when the area of concern is centered on the screen.

Where/how exactly did you install the oesenc_pi plugin?

Thanks
Dave

it's selfcompiled/packaged git. it does not matter if master or legacy branch. same result.

I did more research. Try this.

Code:
touch ~/chartsymbols.xml
and start opencpn
Stable is also affected.

You are right.

don't understand why mbtiles is only considered an overlay. what if only gshhs and mbtiles are present in the system? Or mbtiles for areas where no other charts are available?

Even at the testing stage, 5 versions tried to explain this. And in the first test versions, mbtiles worked correctly in accordance with the map scale and did not overload performance with large territories.
Store charts locally, convert something is a relic of the past!
The future is with tile engines; now, modern chart plotters and navigation software work on their basis.
Navionics, C-MAP and other major map providers publish their maps on Web Tiles. It is enough to connect to the source and get the necessary tiles here and now.
When will CPN learn to work directly with Web Tiles maps

maybe it works somewhere in InlandsWaters near Irkutsk but not on the high seas
For this purpose there are SAS, MOBAC & Co

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.1.428 Beta Test

New depth marks do not fit in the appearance of the font. The original S-52 font is thinner and slightly smaller in size. The stroke was also in place.
Didn’t you think all the symbols of the map’s objects should be converted to SVG, thereby obtaining HD quality with an increase in the size of objects? I have object templates in vector.
- And we still do not have inscriptions of depth values on DEPCN isobaths!
- Depth not visible on underwater debris
- It’s clear that the safe isobath has become thin
- In some places, the map began to tear in DEPARE

Tile-based engine technologies are already used in Navigation software. This is the development of GIS technology which will be based on the new S-100 standard

BlackSea...

On oesenc_pi:
Please try with the PPA packaged oeSENC from the Beta PPA, to try and remove one variable from the matrix

Also, please try to load the "managed" plugin from the Options->Plugins page.

Thanks

My views:

On most screen the hight of the soundings are 2.5 mm as stated. Presumed the chart symbol scale factor equals "0"

That would be a risk for even more crowded soundings at some areas. You can always find the limits in the object query window.
Quote:

If your "Safety depth" is set to the same as the actual chart depth curve that line will be drawn bold.

"don't understand why mbtiles is only considered an overlay."

We have been over this before, and my opinion does not change.
MBTiles should not be considered "real" charts because:

1. They do not contain the correct metadata to ensure safe navigation. Example: Depth soundings, if they exist: Feet, meters, or fathoms? You say, well, obviously photo overlays do not contain soundings, so this is not relevant. But it is. There is no way to know what the content of an MBtiles represents. Could be a screen grab from some other charting app, could be Google data, could be SAP. The tiles are simply georeferenced PNG images, without backup information.

2. They are mostly homemade, with absolutely no provenance. Could be georeferenced totally in error, and there is no way to know, or even test for this.

In a place where only GSHHS and MBTiles are present, I would say that OCPN is simply a useful visualization tool, but certainly not suitable for navigation.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.1.428 Beta Test

Why not have a proper scaling such as:- 1/20000, etc.…, this could help to have a better idea to compare with raster charts, which are still the basic of paper charts required to be carried onboard any vessel. IMO as requested that for many years. Is it that hard to understand!
Best Regards.

Dave

On Linux no problems.

On Win 10. No color shown in the box "Track Colour". It is however possible to click the "Track Colour" and get access to the color-picker, and change the actual color of the track. It's only the selected color that don't show in the "Track Colour" widget.
