Re: OpenCPN Version 5.1.428 Beta Test

rgleason....

Ubuntu Bionic, and other modern Ubuntus, has a flaw, IMHO. As installed from scratch, it seems to be always trying to update itself by "unattended upgrade". This process locks the package database, so the software installer cannot run. But when the installer tries to run, no error message is presented to the user. So it looks like it is doing something, but fails silently.

Perhaps cagney, or some other bionic bionic user, can tell us how to turn off permanently these annoying "unattended upgrade" processes....

You might be better off trying from command line:

Code:
sudo dpkg --install ~/Downloads/opencpn-bionic-gtk3_5.1.428+1.4d35783-1_amd64.deb

P_Dub...

I don't know exactly what you mean by "hassle", but O5.2 will be done when it is done.

It seems that lots of people are having problems with the last test version.
Thanks for your quick reply.
No bad feelings for me.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.1.428 Beta Test

Thomas, Dave

Thanks. Tried disabling updates in "software & updates"
It still does the same thing.

Do I have to reboot?

Is it normal to have "Download Size: 0kb?

Should I try Dave's command line?

Seems like this is kind of what Leamas and bdbcat where discussing recently.

I had downloaded and installed gshhs high res for weather_routiing test

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.1.428 Beta Test

Found under Software & Update Other Software that I had checked
ppa.launchpad.net/bdbcat/opencpn/bionic main

Should I uncheck it?

I also got a message that I could only do a "Partial Update" I don't know where that went now.
Perhaps this was about updating the possible software list, which I just did.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.1.428 Beta Test

I gave up on the deb download for now and updated the beta version.
To update OpenCPN
Update an existing local copy from https://github.com/opencpn/opencpn
Issue the following commands:
$ cd Project/opencpn
$ git pull upstream (maybe origin) master
Now build.
$cd build
$cmake ..
$make
Then Install the compiled program.
$ sudo make install
Default install dir is /usr/local,

Now wants me to start OpenCPN in compatibilty mode due to libweatherrouting.so that is incompatible.

When I go to Options > Plugins and try to "reinstall" shows "installing from cache."
Close Opencpn and open and I get the same compatibility problem due to libweatherrouting.so

so it tried "uninstalling" got confirmation. Then "installed" still says installing from cache. --What does this mean? it did not download an updated version?

Have updated master catalog too. no change.
I don't seem to be getting more than the normal toolbar icons even when oesenc is enabled.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.1.428 Beta Test

One item which surprised me was the printing of all SignalK messages. I believe this behaviour was removed from the github version earlier and from the flatpak version later.

As for the plugins, I had a problem with the Weatherrouting plugin. I won't delve into that since my system is not really a target system for the beta, but you might want to add a button to empty the cache.

Please see the above problems not as bug reports, but as feature requests without strings attached.

Regards.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.1.428 Beta Test

Have removed all plugin lib files in .local/lib/opencpn/
Have found Home>.opencpn>plugins>cache>tarballs
and Home>.opencpn>plugins>cache>metadata> ocpn-plugins.xml (the current catalog file, usually "master", sometimes "beta"

Then restarted O and updated the catalog. Then tried to install a number of plugins. None of them worked.

Either my build of 5.1.428 is bad, or a number of the plugins are bad, or I did the wrong thing clearing out the cache etc.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.1.428 Beta Test

Hi Dave
Thank you so much for your reply and thoughts.

This is my screenshot of that file at approx same scale. You probably won't be able to see it, but there is a *very* feint satellite image under the black.

My setup is Windows 10 64-bit laptop, with MS updates applied.

AMD A9-9425, Radeon R5,dual core 3.1GHz with 8GB RAM

OpenCPN version was the first beta listed in the Dave Register library, and this issue popped up. Now updated to 5.1.428+4d35783 and still happening.

Any other setup parameters?

When I click on the magenta piano button to display the mbtiles, it now seems to take muuuuuch longer to load the image.

I am going to do a search on updating video card drivers etc

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.1.428 Beta Test

Have tried downloading
opencpn-bionic_5.1.428+1.8f20022-1_amd64.deb
and

opencpn-bionic-gtk3_5.1.428+1.8f20022-1_amd64.deb
and installing those using a different method.
The installation still fails with no message.
I have software updates off in software & updates.

I have tried reinstalling the build. Still same problem using Import plugins

Must I uninstall my previous Opencpn "v5.1.428" installation from local build?
This program seems to prompt for "safe mode" now.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5.1.428 Beta Test

I have been through my system, and searched for drivers to update. No new drivers appeared to download. AMD installed a whole lot of bloatware (nice...not!).
The issue persists, unfortunately.
