The problem is pretty clearly related to OpenGL on Windows stalling while trying to render more than 7000 Waypoints on one screen. Interestingly, does not have trouble on linux. I will investigate further.

Meanwhile, please try O4.6.0 again, with OpenGL mode turned OFF, just to confirm.

Thanks
Dave

Dave,

I turned off OpenGL and then imported that GPX again. It's a functional now but very choppy and not smooth, but at least it's not frozen. I have another GPX file I tried with alot less waypoints and it was freezing OpenCPN up as well with OpenGL turned on.

Question Re: OpenCPN Version 4.6.0 Released

When creating a route, if 'Append Waypoint' is selected the route becomes highlighted (wide yellow overlay) until the route is finished.

Track highlighting has not been enabled.

Is this supposed to happen?

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.6.0 Released

Hello,

the update from 4.4 to 4.6 was no problem, but the graphics performance of 4.6 is poor (Surface Pro, I5, 8GB, Win10 64bit, OpenGL option checked). If I switch off the visibility of my routes and tracks (only 4 each with less than 100 markers) the performance is acceptable but not on the level of 4.4. The CPU utilization is always less than 20% (even with intensive zooming and panning, CM93 or KAPs, OpenGL on or off, texture cache on or off). The performance for ENC seems to be improved compared to 4.4.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.6.0 Released

Martin...

Please try this test:
Compare performance with Routes/Waypoints on versus off. Leave tracks on in both cases. OpenGL active.

Thanks

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.6.0 Released

Dave,

Test0 (Routes/Waypoints off, Tracks off) : Reference for Graphics Performance
Test1 (Routes/Waypoints on, Tracks on) : Worse than Test0 (worst case)
Test2 (Routes/Waypoints off, Tracks on) : Same as Test0
Test3 (Routes/Waypoints on, Tracks off) : Same as Test1

What language do you have on your windows OS? I have the same problem on 3 different computers, all running norwegian os. Works fine on one with english windows.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.6.0 Released

j805...

I have determined the root cause of the performance problem with Windows OpenGL in your environment.

The issue affects all Windows versions using OpenGL. It becomes most apparent only when a very large number (~5000 +) of Waypoints are displayed on one screen, although can be detected on some Windows platforms with smaller numbers of points.

We did not Beta test a Windows OpenGL environment with 7000 waypoints.

A solution to the issue is understood, and will be incorporated in the next maintenance release of OpenCPN 4.6.x. The timing for the the next maintenance release of 4.6 is not known yet, and depends on additional user feedback.

Thanks for the report.

Martin...

Thanks for the quick test. It confirms that the problem does not involve tracks, but only routes and waypoints.

See prior post.

Thanks again
