Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

ngux,

the question Thomas asked: the log file entries regarding the offending charts.

Needed to understand what is going on.

Is the check "just in case" or is there a new risk of a race condition somewhere (s63 keystore or something), more serious than "last exit saves things on top"?

Seems I got used over the years to the risk of starting OCPN twice...

The risk is the pretty much the same as it always was - the result could be pretty much anything, leading to pretty much anything. It is simply impossible to predict all the race conditions, less when they will occur. That's why this stuff was implemented.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

ngux

Try two things. First run "Force full Database Rebuild", on the Options Chart tab.
Did this make any difference?

Next deactivate Options->Display->Advanced-> Use Accelerated Graphics
Did this make any difference?

If no to both questions above, I'll need to see the chart.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

Thomas...
I have already seen it and it is corrupted, most likely as a consequence of manual editing of the header. After treatment with bsbfix it is OK.
I'm thinking about integrating a check for this kind of problems into OpenCPN...

It is good to have an answer. Thanx.
Is it possible to get bsbfix somewhere ? or would you advise me to downgrade for now ?

No downgrading, the only way is forward
Just today I found a bit of time to add the supplementary utilities (libbsb, imgkap and mc2bsbh) into the OpenCPN PPA.
So to get it, just do
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libbsb
Or install it from the Software Center.

You have to click on the chart or the title bar to restore focus. This doesn't happen with the Windows version.

I added a task to the tracker for this (FS#1684). This is not new to the current version. I noticed it in the betas following 3.2.2. Pavel looked at it back then but, as I recall, couldn't reproduce it. It needs another look.

Hmmm...

Locking access to writable data structures is fine. But several problems here...

1. A false positive. Running a portable, then starting a regular is not dangerous at all. Yet it is forbidden.

2. One can still start a portable twice. No warning and no protection here.

3. One can still start older releases as the second invocation.

4. I often run one instance underway, and a separate one for planning, not to interfere with track recording, AIS watch etc. So, with 4.0 I start the regular, and then a portable for planning. If, God forbid, the regular crashes, I cannot restart it, without closing down first the portable. But, I mostly use 2.5 for planning, which has no portable mode... so I have to start accustomed to having the underway instance always as portable, which is basically fine...

All this without a real danger, and a lot of other dangers around...

So I am not sure that the right thing is checked here.

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.0 Released

Pjotr...
We check what we can and it works with absolutely no issue in the most common scenario when a 'simple' user wants to start the program for the second time without even knowing it. There is no way to say the already running instance is portable or not - nothing we can do. If you are concerned about not being able to start one of yours, you can adjust your workflow and start both instances as portable.
I don't think this feature needs more work, it prevents the common danger and the informed users like you still have the flexibility, shall they need it. But as you said, if you try hard enough and run portable twice from the same location, you 'fool' it and put your data in potential danger.

Having never tried portable yet with two instances running, can someone describe what happens in runaway mode? -2 exe trying to use same settings and data?

Hard to believe there is no other way ... In the good old days one would have a lock file in the directory meant to be protected, maybe with an owner PID inside. Has it become so bad nowadays?

Having false positives and point-solutions is not good.

If both instances are started from the same location, it is the same as 2 regular instances in parallel.

If both portables are in separate locations, all is fine.
